Songs of Silence

Songs of Silence is an intriguing hybrid of a 4X turn-based strategy game and an RTS, with RPG and card game elements. It was developed by Chimera Entertainment.

Plot

Songs of Silence takes place in a fantasy universe torn by a war between light and dark. The player joins one of the conflict's sides and tries to lead it to victory before their world is consumed by the titular Silence.

Mechanics

The gameplay of Songs of Silence is shown from a top-down perspective. At first glance it doesn't deviate too much from other 4X strategies. The player must explore the world, gather resources, expand cities, field powerful armies and lead them to victory against enemy forces, gradually conquering their lands. The faction we choose determines our playstyle and affects the range of options we have; some factions may be adept at magic, others at steel and numbers.

Nevertheless, there are a couple of features unique to the game. Although kingdom management is turn-based, battles are real time and are dynamic enough to often last only about a minute. There are plenty of varied units to choose from - infantry, monsters, siege machines. Victory requires an advanced army and adequate tactics; for example, the player can take advantage of the terrain and organize ambushes. We can also use special cards to support our units, providing them with special abilities and attacks of varying strength (both precise strikes and bombardments able to raze entire cities); using them skillfully can change the course of many battles. Progressing expands out deck, with the cards representing owned locations and heroes under our command.

Game modes

Songs of Silence can be played in singleplayer as well as in online multiplayer. The game offers an extensive story campaign and a mode dedicated to singular battles.

Technical aspects

The visuals of Songs of Silence are colorful, cartoonish and easily readable. The game's atmospheric soundtrack was composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, known from games such as Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Tactics or Valkyria Chronicles.
