Star Control Origins is a space sandbox developed by Stardock Entertainment. The player assumes the role of a captain of a space ship and he or she explores a dynamically changing galaxy. During the game the player discovers new planets, gathers resources, trades, participates in battles and performs diplomacy.
Star Control: Origins for PC, PS4 and XONE is a space sandbox that combines the traits of role-playing games, strategy games and adventure games. The title was developed by Stardock Entertainment. The creators of the first two entries in the series – Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III – weren’t participating in the development of the game. However, they were consulted when it came to the most important decisions.
Star Control: Origins for PC, PS4 and XONE takes place 43 years before the events of the first game in the series. The title presents a different version of the known universe. The changes were triggered by an event that happened to the Precursors 250 thousand years earlier. The game starts in year 2112, during the first contact with an alien civilization. The player assumes the role of a captain of an Earth ship.
Similarly to previous entries in the series, Star Control: Origins for PC, PS4 and XONE features great freedom of exploration and a wide selection of methods of completing objectives. During the game the player is traveling through space, gathering resources and trading with other species. The player will also spend a lot of time fighting in space battles. They are fought at close distance and they’re based on naval battles. The game also features advanced adventure game traits, like conversations with other characters and diplomacy. It is also possible to upgrade and modify the ship. All of that takes place in a living universe, shaped by actions of the player and of the artificial intelligence.
Multiplayer is an additional attraction of the game. Up to eight players can participate in multiplayer games. The developers introduced many types of skirmishes, from the traditional ones known from Star Control II to new modes, inspired by MOBA genre.
The game features fully three-dimensional graphics. The developers recreated the unusual style of the second game in the series. The title is powered by Nitrous engine created by Oxide studios. It provides high level of details and large scale of space battles.

Game Ratings for Star Control: Origins Video Game.
IGN: 6.9 / 10 by Dan Stapleton
Star Control: Origins does a great job of creating a new universe and stocking it with a diverse range of weird and funny aliens to fight in intense arcadey space battles. But everything you're forced to do on a planet's surface is boring at best and an annoying chore at worst, and that kills a lot of momentum. Because of that, I didn't really start to click with Star Control: Origins until the last third of the campaign when money became mostly irrelevant and the focus shifted to its strong points of story and space combat.
Gaming Nexus: 8 / 10 by Rob Larkin
Remaining true to its roots with engaging ship to ship combat but shifting the gameplay to a more narrative focused exploration game, Star Control: Origins excels at it's prime directive. As we push out from that core loop there are elements that can drag on, but the central experience is where it stands tallest, incorporating a playful tale with entertaining delivery around excellent two dimensional, top down ship to ship combat.

Star Control: Origins fails to capture the magic from its source material. The gameplay is dull, shallow and technically flawed, and it’s not like the story is super engaging either. There’s the occasional small-scale encounter that works well, but these alone aren’t enough to warrant a recommendation. I told one of my friends this afternoon to avoid buying the game, so “not recommended” seems about right. Hell, the fact I stopped playing after only 6 hours should give you an idea of how quickly this game loses its appeal. It’s a shame because I know how good space games can be, it’s just that this one didn’t quite cut it. One day, man, we’ll have a No Man’s Sky that doesn’t suck…
