An action game with RPG and roguelike elements, inspired by Diablo. In Star Vortex we pilot a space ship and there's a top-down perspective. The gameplay is about exploring procedurally generated sectors of space, completing missions, fighting other vessels and upgrading our unit.
The first Diablo game was a groundbreaking production that over the years has seen followers maintained in various conventions. The Star Vortex described here, developed by the independent studio Zorg Games from Georgia, is an action game with RPG and roguelike elements. It transfers the mechanics from Blizzard Entertainment's work into space, and replaces the heroes and their opponents with spaceships.
In Star Vortex we watch the action from a top-down perspective.
Our primary task is to escort the mothership and obtain the keys to the gate leading to Earth. All this to warn humanity about the impending danger.
During the game, we sit at the helm of a ship and explore procedurally generated sectors of space. Although in theory we can go straight to the main boss, in practice it might be better to spend time thoroughly exploring a given area, where we usually find combat, rescue and escort missions.
We often engage in dynamic skirmishes with opponents, among which powerful bosses are the most prominent. Individual races and factions have their strengths and weaknesses. Once we get to know them, we can use them to our advantage.
The environment can also pose a threat to us, as the areas we visit vary in terms of the prevailing conditions. Among them, we will find hot spots gradually overheating our ship's systems or locations overrun by destructive corrosion.
As we progress, we gain experience and advance to the next levels, unlocking new weapons, items, and upgrades. Over time, we improve the ship, transforming it from a small frigate into a powerful battleship. As we progress, we gain access to increasingly powerful equipment including lasers, rocket launchers, energy pulses, kinetic weapons, but also drones, automatic turrets and cloaking fields.
This is not the end, as visits to the mothership are an opportunity to go to the shipyard, where we can take our ship to the workshop and design its individual elements from scratch, choosing weapons and deciding on the appearance of our unit. We can save our works and share them with the community (the game is equipped with an import and export function for projects).
A range of difficulty levels have been implemented, topped by the Hardcore variant designed for the most battle-hardened players.
The two-dimensional graphics of Star Vortex are maintained in a cartoon style.
