A third-person action roguelite game, inspired by titles such as Risk of Rain 2, Helldivers 2, and Quake 3. In Swapmeat, we go against hordes of mutants, aliens, and robots. The key feature is being able to collect limbs of defeated opponents to attach them to our body and gain new skills.
The concept of taking over parts of enemy bodies and their associated skills is not something developers often explore. Independent studio One More Game decided to base their roguelite action game, Swapmeat, on this idea. They drew inspiration from titles such as Risk of Rain 2, Helldivers 2, as well as Quake III: Arena, Serious Sam, and Overwatch.
In Swapmeat the action is viewed from a third-person perspective.
The core of the gameplay is engaging in dynamic battles against hordes of aliens, mutants, and robots, which take place on the surfaces of diverse planets. The adventure takes us through various locations, such as an urban racetrack, an industrial zone, and beautiful landscapes. We encounter enemies that vary in body structure, size, and combat abilities.
As the title suggests, the game allows us to collect body parts from defeated mutants and attach them to our own body. These parts can provide us with wheels to increase mobility, legs with triple jumps (enabling access to high places), torsos with turrets, or even turkey heads that throw grenades at enemies.
Opponents almost always outnumber us, and the gameplay is fast-paced. This means that to effectively operate under pressure, we must get used to randomness, make improvisation our strong suit, and learn to function in chaos. Our agility and reflexes are also useful.
If we manage to survive long enough, we earn an employee rating. Additionally, by completing mission objectives, we acquire so-called Meat Cores, which fuel Carl's experiments with Smart Meat. Thanks to these, during visits to the headquarters (where we go between missions), we can unlock weapons, various bonuses, and permanent upgrades. The latter are particularly important because upon death, we lose the currently used limbs and the abilities associated with them.
Swapmeat can be played solo or in online co-op mode. The difficulty level adjusts in real-time to the number of participants in the game. After completing the story campaign, we can try our hand at the Random Solar Systems mode, where we visit and "cleanse" various worlds.
In Swapmeat we enter a science fiction universe. Experiments conducted by the megacorporation Rangus Meats have led to a galactic crisis, resulting in planets being overrun by aliens, mutants, and robots. During the game, we take on the role of agents tasked with cleaning up this mess.
