Screen Rant: 4 / 5 by Deven McClure

It's particularly impressive the way the game manages to subtly corral the player by changing areas slightly over time, creating a largely linear experience that still feels like it offers some level of free exploration. The very short length of the title and the fact that the overall gameplay is never that complex may be a drawback for some, but it's the sort of title that's more about the overall experience. Thank Goodness You're Here! is a wild, clever ride that's incredibly unique, and a great way to spend an afternoon.

Thank Goodness You're Here! is essentially and interactive saucy postcard from the 1980's which has clearly been made with a lot of a love and great attention to detail. Sadly the gameplay is also from the 1980's, you just run, jump and punch, but the many jokes and asides keep you thoroughly entertained while you do so.

The main pros of the game

  • Humor: The game is widely praised for its absurd and quirky British humor, often compared to classic British comedies like Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. Many players found themselves laughing throughout their playthrough.
  • Art Style and Animation: The hand-drawn 2D art style and animation received high marks, with players appreciating its colorful and cartoonish aesthetic.
  • Voice Acting: The voice performances, including notable actors, were highlighted as a strong point, contributing to the game's charm and humor.
  • Lighthearted Gameplay: The gameplay, while simple (involving slapping objects and characters), is described as fun and engaging, providing a relaxing experience without complex mechanics.
  • Cultural Representation: The game effectively captures the essence of Northern English culture and humor, resonating particularly well with players familiar with the region.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many players noted that the game is quite short, typically lasting around 2-3 hours, which some felt was not worth the full price.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: The gameplay loop can become monotonous, with some players feeling that the lack of complex interactions and puzzles made it less engaging over time.
  • Limited Replay Value: While some enjoyed the humor enough to replay for achievements, many felt that the lack of meaningful content and linearity diminished the game's replayability.
  • Lack of Direction: A few reviews mentioned that the game could be unclear at times about what to do next, leading to frustration during gameplay.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Gameplay Mechanics: Some players expressed a desire for more interactive elements or varied gameplay mechanics beyond slapping and simple fetch quests.
  • Skip Functionality: The inability to skip cutscenes or dialogue was a common complaint, especially for those aiming to achieve 100% completion, as it made replaying tedious.
  • More Depth in Story: While the humor was appreciated, some players felt that the game lacked a compelling narrative hook or deeper storylines to keep them invested throughout.
  • Additional Content: Suggestions for more side quests or secret missions were mentioned, as players felt that more content could enhance the overall experience.

Summary

  • Overall, Thank Goodness You're Here! is celebrated for its humor, art, and charm, but it also faces criticism for its brevity and simplicity in gameplay.
