The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is the second chapter in The Elder Scrolls series and takes place in the biggest area so far. It is possible to traverse the land which doubles the area of the Great Britain, explore dungeons, castles, and even alternative dimensions. Travelling from one side of the world to the other would take over two weeks of real time. The world is inhabited by 750 thousand characters that can be talked to.

The player may technically do whatever he or she wishes and go wherever he or she wants. It is also possible to join any guild and advance in its rank, thus becoming a respected member of Knight Brotherhood, a spy infiltrating the king’s court, a thief stealing the biggest treasures of the world. The game offers six different endings depending on the way the main quests were performed.

  • Massive Open World: The game features an expansive, procedurally generated world that offers a vast number of towns, dungeons, and quests, creating a sense of exploration and discovery.
  • Rich Atmosphere: Users appreciate the game's atmosphere, citing its haunting sense of loneliness and adventure, coupled with retro visuals that enhance immersion.
  • Replayability: The game is noted for its high replay value, especially when enhanced with mods, allowing players to tailor their experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Outdated Mechanics: Many users find the controls and gameplay mechanics to be clunky and archaic, reflecting the game's age (released in 1996).
  • Repetitive Content: The procedurally generated quests and environments can become monotonous, with many players noting that the dungeons and towns lack distinctiveness.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Players report encountering various bugs, including crashes and graphical glitches, which can detract from the experience.
  • Frustrating Design Choices: Some users mention issues with dungeon design and item placement, leading to tedious searching and exploration.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Modern Quality of Life Improvements: Users suggest that the game lacks modern controls and features that enhance user experience, such as controller support and streamlined navigation.
  • More Engaging Content: There is a call for additional handcrafted quests and more unique NPC interactions, as the current offerings can feel generic and uninspired.
  • Enhanced World Features: Some players express a desire for more varied terrain and environmental features in the open world, to make exploration feel more rewarding and dynamic.

Summary

  • Overall, while Daggerfall is recognized as a significant milestone in RPG history with a dedicated fan base, it is also seen as a product of its time that requires modifications and patience to fully appreciate.
