RPG 04 December 2012
The final story-driven DLC expansion for the acclaimed 2011 RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by Bethesda Softworks. The place should be known to the fans of the series from the second expansion to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The story focuses on the mysterious Miraak – the first Dragonborn, wielding similar powers and abilities as the main protagonist. Hundreds of years ago he had gone mad and vanished from the material plane. During the game, the protagonist is tasked with stopping their mad predecessor from retaking the rule over the island. One of the most important novelties in the game mechanics is the possibility to ride dragons and use them to travel. What's more, the expansion offers many new quests as well as several new types of enemies, weapons, armors and powers.

Just as in previous games in the series, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion offers a great deal of freedom – both in creation and progression of your character as well as the order in which you undertake quests, many of which are procedurally generated. In the game you encounter over 40 species of monsters and visit several carefully-designed regions, characterized not only by unique landscapes, but also their own communities, history, and culture. Although one can experience what this world has to offer solo, the adventure gets deeper when the player is accompanied by others. Apart from an additional place to explore and a new storyline, the add-on introduces a new character class, that is, the Warden. The expansion entitled Hearthfire does not introduce any new storylines and hardly any quests. Instead, it focuses on an entirely new feature which is the possibility to build a house and found our own family. Thanks to it, we can build the manor of our dreams (or several) without using additional editors. It is a complicated process, though, because it requires buying a plot of land, designing the building on a drafting table, gathering materials and processing them into construction materials. Having erected a house, we can furnish it, and then, for example, cultivate the garden or breed fish, bees, or cattle. Moreover, we can even adopt children that can be played with but also have to be brought up and protected.

As far as gameplay is concerned, the game does not deviate significantly from its predecessor and offers an even bigger world, twice the size of Great Britain, to explore. The title’s nonlinearity remains its biggest attraction, though.
