The Escapists for PC, AND and etc. is a game that is hard to categorize. It could be described as a prisoner simulator that combines elements of action, adventure, cRPG and logic games. It is a work of an independent studio, Mouldy Toof (the creators of Spud’s Quest) published by a well known company, Team17.
In The Escapists for PC, AND and etc. the player assumes the role of a prisoner who is living inside a penitentiary facility. He lives a daily life, performs various works, works out, interacts with prison mates, eats, goes for walks etc. However, all that time he has one thing in mind: to escape. Because of that, in the meantime he observes his surroundings, looks for weak points of the security system, gathers seemingly useless items that can be actually used for crafting tools, improves the statistics of his character, looks for allies among other prisoners – until finally he decides that he is ready and realizes his plan.
The developers provided great freedom for the players, enabling them to obtain or craft many items, participate in various activities and – what’s most important – escape by using various means. What’s more, in order to keep the game interesting, there are various types of facilities available (including a military prison camp). The title also offers an editor which can be used to create new locations and share them with other players.
The work of Mouldy Toof doesn’t offer multiplayer mode. The only way of competing with other players is through a network high score list on which one can compare his results with results of other players.
The Escapists for PC, AND and etc. was created by using a retro style that references classic 8-bit games with characteristic graphics that use pixels and a top-down perspective.
