Spooky Doorway is a game development studio from Ireland, known for its two point-and-click adventure games under The Darkside Detective brand. In The Seance of Blake Manor, the creators have moved away from the pixel art style characteristic of their previous works. This time they decided on a three-dimensional graphic design using cel-shading technique.

Gameplay

In The Seance of Blake Manor the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Conducting an investigation

The driving force of the game is the investigation led by the main character. We explore the titular manor (the game allows us to freely move between locations) and question suspects. Additionally, we gather evidence and any clues that bring us closer to solving the main mystery.

Time as a key "resource"

The situation is complicated by the fact that our main "resource" here is time, which advances with every action we take. Moreover, individual characters operate based on their own schedules. Since we cannot participate in all events, we must carefully plan our steps to be in the right places at the right times.

The Punished Backlog: 9.8 / 10 by Amanda Tien

The Séance of Blake Manor is the third game from developer Spooky Doorway, and it’s the small Irish studio’s most ambitious yet. My playthrough lasted about 20 hours, but I took the time to have extra conversations, finish side quests, and explore every nook and cranny. The love that has been poured into Blake Manor — literally and in-game — is apparent. I feel lucky to have entered these hallowed grounds and hope it will be made available on more platforms soon so that more people can experience it.

GamesCreed: 3.5 / 5 by Maisie Scott

The Séance of Blake Manor is not just a mystery; it’s also a look at guilt, faith, and the ghosts that history leaves behind. The structure of solving a mystery is satisfying, but the real power of the work lies in the emotional and cultural depth beneath it. The story goes far beyond being a ghost story because of its themes of colonial exploitation and lost identity. The supernatural parts give it an otherworldly feel that stays with you long after the credits roll.

  • Voice Acting and Writing: The voice acting is generally well-received, and the writing is noted for being engaging and immersive.

The main cons of the game

  • Linear Gameplay: Many users feel that the game is too linear and hand-holding, limiting the player's ability to make independent deductions or explore freely.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Several players reported bugs, including progression-breaking issues, and long loading times between areas, which detracted from the overall experience.
  • Simplistic Puzzles: Some players found the puzzles to be too easy or lacking in challenge, reducing the sense of accomplishment when solving mysteries.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Greater Freedom in Investigations: Players wanted more opportunities for exploration and independent problem-solving, rather than being guided through the narrative.
  • Improved Detective Logic: Some suggested that the game could benefit from a more dynamic approach to clue gathering, allowing for more nuanced deductions rather than a straightforward collection of evidence.
  • Search Functionality: A search feature for the evidence log was requested to help players quickly find relevant clues and information.

Summary

  • Overall, *The Séance of Blake Manor* is appreciated for its storytelling and atmosphere but is critiqued for its linearity and some technical issues.
