The Settlers: Heritage of Kings is the fifth installment in a popular franchise of economic strategy games originated in 1994. In contrast to previous games of the series, this new episode offers fully 3D graphics. The environment is generated by a recognized RenderWare technology created by Criterion Software (see: kill.switch and Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon). Stepping into the third dimension also resulted in changing the artwork style – comic-like stylistics gave way to realism.

The game’s world is inspired by the European Medieval times and its architecture, therefore timber-framed houses stand next to massive gothic cathedrals and strongholds. The game tasks you with overthrowing a villainous tyrant and becoming the leader of a mighty kingdom. The way to success leads through establishing a complex chain of economy (chopping down trees, breeding cattle, gathering resources, etc.) and taking military actions. The game’s realism is further enhanced by changing weather conditions and the cycle of seasons. One of the game’s developers is Bruce Milligan, previously responsible for Sid Meier’s Civilization, Tropico: Paradise Island and other titles.

The main pros of the game

  • Nostalgia Factor: Many players have fond memories of the game from their childhood, making it a beloved title for those who enjoyed it in their youth.
  • Engaging Campaign: The game features a strong campaign with a decent storyline that provides hours of gameplay.
  • Graphics: Despite its age, the graphics are considered good for a game released in 2004, with detailed 3D visuals.
  • Resource Management Mechanics: The game incorporates unique resource management and building mechanics that some players find enjoyable.
  • Fun Multiplayer (LAN): While online multiplayer is limited, players appreciate the option to play with friends over LAN.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Content: The Steam version only includes the base game without any expansions or additional content, which disappoints many players who remember the Gold Edition's richer content.
  • Technical Issues: Many users report that the game does not run properly on modern systems (like Windows 10) without workarounds, such as using No-CD patches.
  • Limited Multiplayer Options: The multiplayer mode is often described as redundant, with few active players online.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some players find the gameplay can become repetitive, especially in resource gathering and mission objectives.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Absence of Expansions: Users express frustration over the lack of available expansions that were part of the original game, which included additional campaigns, units, and gameplay features.
  • Skirmish Mode: Players desire a proper skirmish mode with AI opponents, as the current options are limited and repetitive.
  • Improved AI: Many reviews mention the need for better AI, as the enemy units do not evolve or build, making battles less engaging.
  • Language Options: There are requests for additional language options, particularly German, which was available in previous versions but is missing in the Steam release.
  • Enhanced Voice Acting: Some players note that the voice acting is repetitive and could use improvement.

Summary

  • Overall, while "The Settlers: Heritage of Kings" is appreciated for its nostalgic value and engaging campaign, it suffers from significant content limitations, technical issues on modern systems, and a lack of depth in gameplay compared to other titles in the genre.
