Tormented Souls is a classic survival horror action adventure game, in which the action is presented from a third person perspective (TPP). The style of the game strongly refers to such classics as Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Alone in the Dark, keeping the elements that made them popular. However, there are some improvements - the camera is more dynamic and the control scheme has been modernised. Tormented Souls was developed by independent studio Dual Effect, while PQube released it.

Plot

The game is set in the fictional Winterlake. Caroline Walker, the protagonist, has to solve the disappearance of her two sisters and goes to Wildberger Mansion, an abandoned residence turned into a hospital, where she hopes to gain some valuable information. While searching the building, she is attacked and knocked unconscious by an unknown person. Seven days later she awakens suddenly - connected to a strange, decaying apparatus, completely naked and submerged in a bathtub filled with musty water. Soon after her release, she realises she has lost all her memories and begins to wander the corridors, trying to remember who she is and understand the purpose of her imprisonment in this mysterious, eerie mansion.

The main pros of the game

  • Nostalgia Factor: The game successfully evokes feelings of nostalgia for classic survival horror games from the 90s and early 2000s, particularly drawing inspiration from titles like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
  • Atmosphere: The game is praised for its excellent atmosphere, sound design, and effective use of fixed camera angles, which enhance the horror experience.
  • Exploration and Puzzles: Players find exploration rewarding, with most puzzles being logical and engaging, although some are notably challenging.
  • Character Design: The main character, Caroline Walker, is described as adorable and endearing, adding to the game's charm.
  • Creepy Enemies: The monsters are well-designed and contribute to the horror ambiance, with a manageable variety that fits the game's length.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: The combat system is viewed as primitive and lacking in strategy, leading to a sense of comfort and predictability in enemy encounters.
  • Puzzle Difficulty: While many puzzles are logical, some are considered vague or overly abstract, leading players to seek online solutions.
  • Final Quarter Setting: The game transitions into a sewer setting in the final quarter, which some players felt was a downgrade from the more interesting environments of the mansion and hospital.
  • Underwhelming Nemesis Mechanics: The game's "Nemesis" character is criticized for not being a real threat, as players can easily evade it by leaving and re-entering rooms.
  • Technical Issues: Some players experienced performance issues, including frame rate drops and poor sound balancing, particularly in voice acting and audio synchronization.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Save System: The save system, which relies on limited checkpoints, is viewed as frustrating, especially for players who prefer more frequent save opportunities.
  • More Intuitive Navigation: Users expressed a desire for clearer navigation guidance and a more user-friendly map system to reduce confusion about where to go next.
  • Enhanced Voice Acting and Writing: Many reviews point out the poor quality of voice acting and writing, which detracts from immersion and overall experience.
  • Replayability: There is a general consensus that the game lacks incentives for replaying, as it does not offer new items or significant changes in subsequent playthroughs.
  • Visual and Technical Polish: Some players noted that, despite its indie charm, the game could benefit from better graphics and more polished camera angles to enhance immersion.

Summary

  • Overall, "Tormented Souls" is appreciated for its homage to classic survival horror, engaging atmosphere, and satisfying puzzles, but it also faces criticism for its combat, navigation challenges, and technical shortcomings.
