Creative Assembly studio is mainly known for its elaborate strategy games. In its early years, the team specialized in historical games, but in 2016 it expanded its area of interest to include the fantasy world of Warhammer. Nine years later, the developers have officially confirmed that they are once again expanding their focus, this time to science fiction realities, with the announcement of the Total War: Warhammer 40,000 game described here.
Despite the new futuristic setting, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 remains largely faithful to the premise developed for previous productions under this banner. The gameplay, therefore, takes place on two levels - strategic, large-scale, and tactical, focusing on the battles we fight.
The work of Creative Assembly puts at our disposal a vast galaxy, which becomes for the field of our actions. The decisions we make not only determine the fate of our faction, but also affect the shape of its entire cosmic environment.
With the strategic layer, all issues related to the management of our empire rest on our shoulders. We make decisions about the war economy, recruit troops and upgrade our fleet, as well as give orders for attack and defense.
When clashes occur, the gameplay shifts to the battlefields, and we take direct control of our troops, which we command in real time. On the battlefield, success is determined not only by the number and sophistication of the army, but also, among other things, by the use of terrain (which is subject to deformation).
Both infantry and war machines can be deployed, and powerful strategic skills (such as bombing from orbit or wiping out an entire planet with apocalyptic weapons) can be tested and used to ensure victory.
The title puts four factions at our disposal. We are talking about Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks and Eldar. Each of them has a unique set of units, individual strengths and weaknesses, and above all - their own style of fighting. All this means that there is something for both lovers of precision operations and commanders emphasizing aggressive, barbaric actions.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 allows us to create our own army, deciding on the faction's title, heraldry, iconography and armaments. In addition, we can adapt its features to our tactics.
