An action RPG with strategy elements by Stoic Studio - the creators of The Banner Saga. Though it was designed with four-player co-op in mind, it also supports singleplayer.
Towerborne is the first game created by Stoic Studio to not be part of The Banner Saga series. It was published by Xbox Games Studios, meaning it's been available as part of PC/Xbox Game Pass since its release day.
All safe enclaves in the world has fallen except for the Belfry - a massive tower in the middle of the wild, surrounded by monsters pouring out of the City of Numbers. The playable character is an Ace, created in the spirit realm, tasked with protecting the Belfry's survivors and learn the truth about humanity's near extinction.
Though Towerborne was designed with four player co-op in mind, even solo players are never truly alone. Aces can summon shadows, each granting access to unique abilities. They add to the player's standard moveset, consisting of weapon attacks, such as maces, gauntlets, daggers, swords and shields.
After each successful expedition, the player returns to the Belfry - their home base - to upgrade their gear, complete quests, accept new ones. Subsequent expeditions differ greatly from each other, as the world is constantly evolving and - over the course of successive seasons - expanding with new regions.
The player can move between them across hexagonal tiles on a strategic map. The further we delve, the more dangerous things get. Exploration - focusing on collecting treasure - and combat are both shown from the side.
Towerborne features stylized, colorful visuals. It supports singleplayer and online co-op.

Niche Gamer: 9 / 10
Not being able to name your Ace feels like a strange oversight. Will this game get more content or a roadmap past its release? Let’s hope so, as it’s a real hero of a game, lighting a path through a depressing absence of couch co-op RPGs.

Towerborne's full release brings a wealth of smart tweaks that drastically improve the game from its early access version, crafting a gripping beat 'em up RPG that comes just shy of greatness.
Game8: 76 / 100 by Michael Gerra-Clarin
Towerborne is a good game. In fact, it’s superior to its Early Access release in almost every way. With an actual narrative, an engaging gameplay loop, and decent presentation, the game certainly has a unique charm that’s worth its weight. However, its potential will never fully be realized, as the removal of online servers really puts a spotlight on the game’s hollow multiplayer identity.
