Trials Rising, released on PC, PS4, etc. is a motorcycle arcade game. It was developed by RedLynx studio, the creators of all the other installments of the series. Ubisoft Kiev team also helped in production.

Mechanics

The authors decided to abandon the futuristic atmosphere of Trials Fusion and the postapocalyptic realities of mobile Trials Frontier. Trials Rising offers us a return to the modern times that we know from the earlier games in this series.

In terms of gameplay mechanics, the production is faithful to the traditions of the series. The graphics were made in 3D, but the gameplay takes place in two dimensions. Our goal on each track is mainly to reach the finish line in one piece. This is not easy because the maps are filled with traps, obstacles and other dangers, and overcoming them requires not only dexterity but also cleverness.

Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by Dom Reseigh-Lincoln

Trials Rising is the (mostly) full package you've been waiting for. With its huge list of tracks to tackle and all the races and trick-based stunts you could ask for, RedLynx has served up the best instalment in the series since Trials Evolution. With a killer soundtrack, tons of customisation and an impressively deep tutorial mode, it's only really let down by a tutorial-free Track Editor. The drop to 30fps might put off those also playing on other platforms and the drop in visual fidelity can be hard to miss at times, but despite its blemishes, Trials has proved its right at home on Nintendo Switch.

TheSixthAxis: 8 / 10 by Stefan L

Trials Rising takes us back to basics with the real world inspiring a long series of new and inventive trials, but losing none of the challenge or RedLynx's dark sense of humour. The menus are a bit messy, the loot boxes pointless, and it doesn't really advance the series, but when you get into it this is the series back to its addictive, infuriating, "one more go!" best.

Hardcore Gamer: 3.5 / 5 by Cory Wells

There's no doubt that Trials Rising is the culmination of the entire series.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Gameplay: Many players enjoy the core mechanics of the game, appreciating the blend of physics-based platforming and motorcycle racing. The gameplay is described as addictive and fun, with a high skill ceiling.
  • Track Design: The tracks are well-designed and set in diverse, real-world-inspired locations, providing a visually appealing experience.
  • Customization Options: Players appreciate the ability to customize their riders and bikes, adding a personal touch to the gameplay.
  • Multiplayer Elements: The game offers both online and local multiplayer modes, including a unique tandem bike mode for cooperative play.
  • Community Content: There’s a robust community that creates additional tracks, extending the game’s replayability.
  • Tutorials and Accessibility: The game includes tutorials and a gradual difficulty curve that helps newcomers learn the mechanics effectively.

The main cons of the game

  • Launcher Issues: A significant number of users report problems with the Ubisoft Connect launcher, preventing the game from starting or causing crashes.
  • Grindiness and Progression System: The progression system is criticized for being grindy, requiring players to complete repetitive challenges to unlock new levels and content. This is seen as a departure from the more linear progression of previous titles in the franchise.
  • Microtransactions: Players express frustration over the presence of loot boxes and microtransactions for cosmetic items, which detracts from the overall experience.
  • Performance Issues: Users report performance problems, including stuttering, slow loading times, and graphical issues that make the game feel less polished than expected.
  • Lack of Support: Many players feel that Ubisoft has not provided adequate support for the game, particularly regarding persistent technical issues and bugs.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Traditional Progression System: Users miss a more linear and straightforward progression system that allows for unlocking levels based on skill rather than completing arbitrary challenges.
  • Offline Mode: The requirement to be online to access certain features is a point of contention, with some players wishing for an offline mode.
  • Clearer Unlock Requirements: Players express a desire for clearer in-game guidance on how to unlock certain tracks and bikes, as the current system feels opaque and frustrating.
  • Improved UI/Map Navigation: The world map and UI are often described as cluttered and confusing, making it difficult for players to navigate and find new events or challenges.

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, while Trials® Rising has a solid foundation with enjoyable gameplay and creative content, it suffers from significant technical issues, a frustrating progression system, and a lack of support from the publisher, Ubisoft. Players recommend caution, especially regarding purchasing the game due to its current state.
