Warno: Northag is the first major expansion for Warno, an RTS from 2024 (this is when its full version debuted). It tells an alternative story of the Cold War that turned into World War III. The add-on was developed by the authors of the base version of the game – Eugen Systems studio. Their portfolio includes a game called RUSE, as well as Wargame and Steel Division series.

New features in the expansion

Warno: Northag takes us to the North German Plain, which became a battlefield between the forces of the Warsaw Pact and the titular Northag. While the former represent Polish, East German, and Soviet forces, the latter are made up of Belgian, Dutch, West German, and American forces, under British command.

  • Balance Issues: There are complaints regarding the balance between NATO and Pact divisions, with many NATO divisions being viewed as underpowered or lacking in unique capabilities compared to their Pact counterparts.
  • Underwhelming NATO Divisions: Several NATO divisions, particularly the British and Belgian ones, were criticized for being lackluster, with some players feeling they don't bring anything new or interesting to the game.
  • Reused Assets: A significant portion of the new content has been described as merely reused assets with slight modifications, leading to disappointment among players expecting more innovative additions.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Unique Units: Players expressed a desire for more innovative and unique units in the new divisions, rather than the heavy reliance on reskins and slight variations of existing units.
  • Better Balance and Variety in NATO Divisions: Users noted that NATO divisions need more distinct characteristics and capabilities to compete effectively against Pact divisions.
  • Expanded Army General Campaigns: Some players felt that the new campaigns lacked depth and did not introduce significant new mechanics or quality-of-life improvements compared to the base game.
  • Inclusion of Additional Nations: There were calls for more representation of Western German forces and other nations within the NATO framework to enhance the thematic focus of the DLC.

Summary

  • Overall, while WARNO - NORTHAG offers some enjoyable content and new divisions, many players felt that it fell short in terms of value for money, balance, and innovation, particularly for NATO factions.
