Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries for PC and XONE is an adventure-platformer inspired by the fairy tale of the bad wolf and Little Red Cap. The title is created by the independent studio GRIN – the Belgian team put together in 2002. During their existence, they mainly developed simple games for companies that deal with websites and aim at the mobile productions industry. Woolfe is GRIN’s first completely original and independent production.
The plot serves as a dark alternative to the fairy tale of Little Red Cap. The action is embedded in a fantasy, steampunk world which is on the brink of an industrial revolution. The heroine is a 14-year-old girl who, as a child, was found by her grandma in the forest. The protagonist’s mother had mysteriously disappeared before she was born. Joseph, Little Red Cap’s father, unsuccessfully kept trying to learn about his wife’s vanishing, but finally gave up and devoted himself to raising his daughter and working in a factory. The family lived an easy life until Joseph died in a supposed accident. Little Red Cap never accepted the fact that it was just a misfortune and decided to take revenge on B.B. Woolfe – the CEO of the company Woolfe Industries – who she believes is responsible for all the catastrophes her family experienced.
Gameplay in Woolfe is similar to that in the Trine series. Apart from platformer sequences, during which you encounter a number of various terrain obstacles, the player needs to combat a set of diverse enemies, solve simple logic puzzles, and sneak behind powerful enemies’ backs. Little Red Riding Hood’s main weapon is an axe with which she can carry out special attacks and combos.
The visuals in Woolfe published on PC and XONE feature a style that mixes a fairy tale and the real world, which brings to mind productions like Alice: Madness Returns. Even though being very detailed and impressive, the locations, such as industrial sites, cities, and lush forests, are still close to nothing when compared to Trine 2.
