The Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio team is developing the Like a Dragon / Yakuza series not only by creating new installments, but also by refreshing older productions under this banner. After Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2, the Japanese team prepared a remake of the third part of the series, namely Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties described here. We are talking about a package that includes an upgraded version of the base version of Yakuza 3, as well as Dark Ties which is a separate production.

New features in the remake

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties stands out from the original due to its thoroughly refreshed graphics. The developers also focused on the narrative layer, which was enriched with new story plots and cut-scenes. In addition to this, the remake offers a new combat system.

Dark Ties

Dark Ties is a separate story dedicated to Yoshitace Mine - a character known from the "base game". After the fall of his company, he allowed himself to be drawn into the dark underworld of the Yakuza. Nonetheless, the desire to find true ties remains strong in him, and his search forces him to engage in boxing matches and pushes him to experience various adventures.

Like a Dragon / Yakuza Game Series

Yakuza (Japanese. Ryu ga Gotoku - Like a Dragon) is a series that began as TPP action adventure games, while in 2020 began a love affair with the jRPG genre. The essence of gameplay in productions under this banner are spectacular clashes, in which we mostly use our own fists, white weapons such as clubs or samurai swords, as well as elements of the environment, such as trash cans or bicycles. Firearms are present, but usually do not play a major role. The protagonists have numerous fighting styles, which we can upgrade. Of great importance are impressive finishers, in which opponents are eliminated in a particularly impressive way.

Overall, Yakuza Kiwami 3 is now the best way to experience Yakuza 3, especially since this retcon will likely now be the established canon. There’s no arguing that it has improved on the original in many ways, not only giving it a much-needed facelift and tinkering under the hood to make for a smoother experience, but adding a whole host of new content to whet our appetite. While I lament some losses during the creative overhaul and I am notably disgruntled by one major change, I can’t deny that the positives far outweigh the negatives.

If you've never played DQ7, then by all means check this remake out. It's an epic RPG that still has my favorite job system of any game ever. But if you're like me, and you've experienced the other versions of DQ7 before, you may be disappointed by how familiar you find Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined. For me, it was like visiting old friends I hadn't seen in a while, which ultimately outweighed its flaws.

  • Simplified Combat: While some enjoyed the combat, others felt it was overly simplified and lacked depth, particularly in comparison to previous entries in the series.
  • Recasting Controversy: The decision to cast Teruyuki Kagawa, a known sexual offender, was heavily criticized and overshadowed the game's release.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Lack of Substories: Many players expressed disappointment over the significant reduction in substories, which were a hallmark of the original game.
  • Original Characters: Key characters like Komaki and Mack were removed, which diminished the richness of the game world.
  • Revelations and Hitman Missions: Features from the original Yakuza 3 that added depth and variety to gameplay were absent.
  • Dynamic Storytelling: The narrative depth and complexity that characterized the original Yakuza 3 were perceived as lacking, with many players feeling the remake did not capture the same emotional weight.
  • Variety in Gameplay: Players noted that the game felt repetitive, with many side activities being less engaging than those in previous titles.

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, while "Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties" has its strengths, particularly in combat and character engagement, the significant cuts to content, controversial casting decisions, and performance issues have led to a largely negative reception among fans of the original Yakuza 3.
