200,000 dollars for stapled Switch 2. The console from GameStop is breaking records at a charity auction

No surprise here, the Switch 2 launch was a huge event. Nintendo sold 5 million units in its first month, making it the fastest-selling console ever. But of course, not everything went perfectly, since unexpected things always pop up. One of the bigger mess-ups happened at a GameStop in LA, where some consoles got damaged because the receipts were stapled right onto the boxes. Luckily, they quickly replaced the broken units, and now the whole thing has turned into a bit of an ongoing joke. GameStop even put the very first “stapler accident” Switch 2 up on eBay, and all the money from the auction is going to charity.

Stapled tragedy going once, going twice!

It’s always amazing when something bad ends up turning into something good, and this situation is a perfect example. Someone had a terrible surprise when they opened their long-awaited Switch 2, but now that same console is up on eBay. The auction has already passed $200,000, and it’s still climbing with more than five days left.

The “GameStop Staplegate Charity Auction” isn’t just selling the repaired Switch 2 either. It also comes with a certificate of authenticity (signed by Ryan Cohen), the infamous stapler that caused all the damage, plus the actual staple that was “carefully removed and preserved.” Yes, the one that punched through the console’s screen.

The stapled Switch 2 units weren’t the only incident since launch. Someone stole over 2,800 consoles from a delivery truck heading to Texas. What they probably don’t realize, though, is that as soon as those Switch 2s pop up online, Nintendo can just remotely brick them. And since nobody’s figured out how to hack the new console, those stolen units will probably end up as nothing more than useless plastic.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
