Talking corpses in Baldur's Gate 3 aren't new, but this time it's about something more, a clue that dates back to early access.

If you're the kind of person who loves to interact with every aspect of the game world, you'll be interested in a character (or rather, her words) from Baldur's Gate 3 that a fan recently encountered. We're talking about the very beginning of the game, when we crash with the Nautiloid on a beach near the Emerald Grove.

Among the wreckage of the ship, we will find several unfortunate people who were at the scene of the disaster and paid for it with their lives. We can talk to those poor guys using the spell for speaking with the dead. From the mouth of one of them, however, we will learn a bit about other castaways, as well as a mysterious woman whom he allegedly saw before his death. She was supposed to be stunning, and Mind Flayers and other people present at the disaster site followed her.

Who is she?

Was it Shadowheart (which also ends up on the beach after the shipwreck), or maybe someone else? Could it be one of those illusions that a person sees when they slide into nothingness before death? Nothing like that.

The solution is very simple and is related to one of the Mind Flayers, who will try to deceive us at the scene of the disaster and thus prevent his imminent death. As some of the most experienced game fans suggest, it's probably also a memento from the early access:

You know the dying Mind Flayer in the crashed Nautiloid? The one you normally just shoot with a crossbow, get your XP, and move on? Back in early access, there were a few other commoners in the wreckage, being charmed by the dying Mind Flayer, convincing them that it was a beautiful woman in need of their help. If you approached, you had to use your tadpole to break them free of its compulsion, or it would force them to attack you.

There is evidence to support this argument, which has been uncovered by invaluable data miners. In the game files, they found a document called devnotes with a section describing this particular situation, where we read:

The devnotes in the transcripts say: "You speak with the dead soul of a fisherman, who hurried to the crash site when he saw your ship fall from the sky. At the site, he saw a mindflayer, disguised as a beautiful woman, and was killed by Intellect Devourers (brains)."

However, there are even more fantastic details like this, and the more we talk to the dead (and also to animals - two underrated spells), the more we can learn about this crazy world. For those of you who haven't yet been tempted, we sincerely recommend them - thanks to these, we can, for example, talk to the god Bane, who uses Gortash's body to communicate.
