Civilization 7 early launch failure. Players blast it as an ‘Unfinished Mess’ and highlight a long list of issues
This isn't what we were all waiting for. The first reviews of Civilization 7 and player feedback are in.

Sid Maier’s Civilization 7 just launched in advance access, and let’s just say – it’s not going over well. Players are pretty much in agreement that the game is a total disaster. If you want the full breakdown, check out our review, or just take a peek at what’s happening on Steam right now.

Civ 7’s reviews, a glimpse of a game still in the oven
Right now, Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 has a Mostly Negative rating on Steam, with just 37% of over 1,000 reviews being positive. Safe to say, players aren’t thrilled. Here’s what they’re saying:
A couple minutes in and it's just... so blatantly unfinished, especially by Civ standards. The UI is total slop, everything looks super janky, the resource icons are like stock images from 1998.
Bare bones shouldn't have been released in its current form needed more time to add basic features, ESPECIALLY for this egregious price.

The age transition completely breaks immersion by wiping out progress and setups- it feels more like a reset than a natural evolution. The civ switching is confusing and doesn’t really make sense, breaking the whole idea of leading a civilization through history.
Suffice to say, people are giving up after just an hour of playing.
The most disappointing part? Fans waited nearly a decade, hoping for a solid follow-up to Civilization 6, which has an 86% positive rating from almost 250,000 reviews on Steam. Instead, they got an unfinished, poorly designed game. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – Civ 7 is loaded with game-breaking bugs, like resources not adding to your city, making it impossible to progress to the next era.
Steam reviews and OpenCritic scores don’t add up for Civilization 7
The weirdest thing is the contrast between early Steam reviews and OpenCritic scores for Civilization 7. The game holds a rating of 82, with 85% giving it the thumbs up, with ratings like 9/10 or 4.5/5.
However, our colleague rated it a much lower 5.5 out of 10, and to be honest, some of us believe it didn’t even deserve that high of a score. But don't worry – with our new AI-generated Steam review summaries, you'll soon have a much clearer and more complete picture of how the game is really stacking up. Just keep in mind that this feature will only be available after the game’s full release on February 11.
