Concerns About Price of PS5: „If it's Over $500 I'd Rather Upgrade My PC”

Many players are worried whether Sony will set the price of the PS5 at a level that would match their expectations. For some people, having to buy a console that costs more than $450 or $500 is a no-go, indicating that a PC upgrade is a better option.

PS5 is still a big mystery.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. Gamers are afraid that the PS5 will be too pricey;
  2. For most people, the magic limit above which it will not be profitable to buy a console is $500;
  3. According to analysts, the price of the console will be between $450 and $500.

Despite the postponement of Sony's PS5 game presentation due to the riots in the United States, PlayStation 5 continues to stir up a lot of excitement - fans feel that the moment when the Japanese company reveals their cards is coming. However, the positive emotions are also accompanied by uncertainty and a lot of concern. One of the most frequently discussed topics is the possible price of the device - numerous threads on the topic appeared on Reddit.

PS5 - price is one of the main concerns

Although most people expect the device to be more expensive than the PS4 on the day of release, some admit that above a certain price level the console will no longer be attractive to them.

"500$ = many people will buy it without doubt, 600$ IDK about others, but it wont be day one for me for sure in that case," says BYKHero-97.

"Yep. Anyone who thinks it’s going to be anything less than $500 has the attention of a goldfish. I’m just hoping it’s not $700," notes Popetown.

Some are willing to pay more, e.g. $600. However, they are setting conditions, such as far-reaching backward compatibility.

"As long as Sony doesn't sell it for $600 it won't be a total disaster for them in the short term, though I personally would be willing to spend that much if PSX/2/3 BC is baked onto it," notes OsananajimiShipper.

Or maybe a PC instead?

Some people note that too high a price for the PS5 - as well as the Xbox Series X - will make the investment in a PC a more sensible option.

"People are also not willing to spend a lot. I for sure won’t even think about buying it if it’s over $499, might as well upgrade my PC at that point," WalrusOwner says.

"Seriously. I will buy a PC next year if it's going to cost that much. Next year or the year after PC will overtake the market in specs. I won't have to spend $60 a year on a half-assed Sony servers," agrees Archer_90.

What will the price of PS5 be?

According to well-known Wedbush Securities analyst, Michael Pachter, and a former employee of EA and Microsoft, Peter Moore, Sony will have to set the price of the PS5 at $500, and the Redmond giant will most likely take advantage of this fact and sell the stronger (at least on paper) Xbox Series X as much as $100 cheaper. Amounts in the range of 450-500 dollars have been reported in the past by other analysts - such as Piers Hading-Rolls from Ampere Analysis.
