It’s been a while since Diablo III was launched. All of the fans probably remember error 37, where it was impossible to connect to the game servers and enjoy the production. Fortunately, the premiere of Diablo IV was much better as the developers learnt their lesson. It doesn’t mean that the 4th, main instalment of the series is flawless and doesn’t have its own hiccups. We have already reached Season 2 in D4, Season of Blood, and players are starting to see some network issues, especially with lagging. If you have experienced this problem, let’s analyse what can be done about it.

Lags in Diablo 4 Season 2

Despite voices of disappointment from some players, Season 2 in Diablo 4 was generally warmly received. Due to that, there is a lot of fans coming back to check it out and the traffic is increased. Among those players, there is a group which is experiencing lags, especially when leaving main game hubs.

If you think that the game is also lagging for you, it is worth checking the latency first to confirm what is actually happening. To do that on PC, you have to press Ctrl+R twice. Latency up to 100 – 150ms should be acceptable, though players from different regions of the world are reporting ping over 1000ms (1 second), which renders the game unplayable. That happens despite of their Internet connection speed.

Ctrl+R is a very useful key combination in Diablo 4 as using it cycles through important performance information. First it shows FPS count, then latency and then turns off the statistics completely.

The reason for that can be high player traffic as many of the fans jumped into the fray to play the new season. This shouldn’t ever happen though, as Blizzard should be prepared for an influx of gamers.

It happened in the past that the game servers were DDOSed (term for Distributed Denial-of-Service, basically means maliciously overloading a server’s traffic, making it impossible to use). This doesn’t seem to be the case now, as there is no official information from Blizzard.

Considering that there is a number of players experiencing this kind of issue would mean that the problem lies on the game’s side and all we can do is to wait for official resolution. The only advice that the community came up with is to disable cross-play in game, though it has low chance of success. While waiting for fix from developers’ side, it won’t hurt to double check your own network infrastructure:

  1. Make sure that, if only possible, you use cable to connect your machine to the Internet instead of Wi-Fi,
  2. Restart your router, especially if you haven’t done it for a while,
  3. Turn off internet browser, suspend any downloads, and turn off any programs that may be using your internet transfer,
  4. Test your connection’s speed. If there is anything off, contact your ISP.
