Dying Light developers prepared an update that will give the 10-year-old game a new look. The free Retouched Update, scheduled for release later this month, will include a number of fixes.
Dying Light will soon become more beautiful - on June 26, Techland will provide a free update that will change the face of the game on all platforms. The devs used their experience and current technological capabilities to take exploring Harran to a whole new visual level. Tymon Smektala (director of the series) revealed that this is the result of exceptionally meticulous work.
Over the past couple of years, we've added a lot, customized a lot, and learned how to squeeze more from the tech we already have. One day, someone just started applying those learnings to some old assets - and it just clicked that we could do that across the whole game - explains Technical Director Grzegorz Swistowski.
Giving Dying Light a new look required a lot of manual work. Thanks to it, it was possible to improve the quality of textures and lighting, enhancing the realism of the world, despite the obstacles posed by 10-year-old technology. Techland has managed to increase the maximum detail display range from 260% to 340%, and we will be able to adjust this in the game settings.
I basically walked through the entire map, looking for assets to be improved. And all of those had to be changed manually by our artists - adds Grzegorz Swistowski.
Dying Light: Retouched Update will be released simultaneously on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The level of changes will depend on the hardware you have. With the update, a remastered soundtrack will be added to the game, prepared by the writer of the original, composer Pawel Blaszczak.
Thanks to the Retouched Update on June 26, Techland gives fans of the series the perfect excuse to replay the first installment. It's worth recalling the story of the main character, Kyle Crane, before the release of the spin-off game starring him, Dying Light: The Beast, which is coming out on August 22nd this year for PC and 8th and 9th generation consoles.
