Dying Light: The Beast is a spin-off of a series of action games with RPG elements, set in a world taken over by the living dead. This game initially started as an add-on to Dying Light 2: Stay Human, but over time grew so much that it became a standalone project. It was developed by the Polish studio Techland.

Plot

The main character of Dying Light: The Beast is Kyle Crane, known from the first part of the series and its add-on The Following. After 13 years of brutal experiments, the protagonist regains his freedom and plans to take revenge on his tormentors. The hunt for the latter leads him to Castor Woods, once swarming with tourists, now serving as an arena for various factions and hordes of zombies. As if that wasn't enough, a powerful beast is prowling here and because of it no one can sleep peacefully.

Dying Light: The Beast is neither an expansion nor a sequel. However, it is another good opportunity for an extremely spectacular extermination of zombies in a beautiful, open world of reasonable size.

The New Dying Light Is Not a Shooter, Even Though It Looks Like One

I’ve seen Dying Light: The Beast in action. The gameplay makes a huge departure from Dying Light 2 – although the addition of firearms doesn’t turn it into a shooter.

The game is great, but the Easter eggs are even better. Techland decided to mine some blocks in Dying Light The Beast.

GameOnly: 3 / 5 by Michał Marasek

It’s clear that the studio still hasn’t returned to the form it lost somewhere around the release of Dying Light 2 Stay Human. Their latest title feels like a work heavily inspired by the cult classic from 2015 but at the same time produced by the same team that screwed up the sequel. The lack of fresh, successful gameplay ideas is very noticeable here.

Twisted Voxel: 8 / 10 by Salal Awan

Dying Light: The Beast represents a welcome return to form, with a more focused narrative and improved parkour mechanics that harken back to the original game's strengths. While it forgoes advanced graphical features like ray tracing and suffers from a generic villain, the game's polished gameplay, solid performance, and satisfying core loop make it a worthwhile experience for fans of the series.

Full Review

GameSpace: 7 / 10

Dying Light: The Beast is a ghost of a great franchise, competently executed but lacking the spark that once made it special. The game lacks the pioneering audacity of the original, and lacks the narrative ambition of the sequel. It's a grind that, despite its apparent dynamism, leads nowhere. On top of all this, the game was extremely rough at release, and some of its bugs remain unfixed.
