Evolve goes free-to-play on PC

After a year of being a full-priced title, Evolve was decided to switch to the free-to-play model. Beta-testing of the game's new format starts today.

Turtle Rock has taken a brave step toward reinvigorating their asymmetrical FPS – Evolve is going free-to-play on PC. The official confirmation of the news follows the appearance of a mysterious counter on Evolve’s official website as well as the game’s disappearance from Steam Store. Before Evolve is re-released in the new format, it is going to be beta-tested, starting today. The beta will most probably begin when the aforementioned counter hits zero, that is at 9 a.m. PDT.

Evolve was much criticized for its Season Pass.

Those who paid for the original game and Season Pass will be given Founder status along with all the content already owned (wich suggests that not all content will be offered for free in the new free-to-play version, but no microtransactions have been confirmed so far). In the future, they will also be receiving other gifts, rewards, and special access.

Apart from the change of business model, Evolve is going to literally evolve – some of the promised changes include: reworked hunter classes, improvements to maps and UI, tweaks to overall performance, overhauled progression system, and more.
