Half-Life meets Unreal Engine 4, and it turns out gorgeous

Project Lambda, a fan modification striving to port Half-Life to Unreal Engine 4, is out now. It costs nothing and lets you rediscover the most memorable part of the game – the intro.

Could this be… Black Mesa?

All Gordon had to do was to board the darn train car. Now, 20 years later, he can do it again – to simply enjoy the view. Project Lambda, a fan modification trying to port Half-Life’s intro to all-shiny Unreal Engine 4, has been finished and is available for everybody to enjoy. Download the mod by clicking here. It’s a little bit over 1GB, system requirements are close to none, and of course – the whole thing is free.

Yes, it could. And yes – it is!

Now, if you think that bringing just the intro of Half-Life to UE 4 is no big deal, consider two things. First – it is indeed a great success. The small, amateur team of developers had spent months upon months coding and designing before the project shaped up the way it was supposed to. Second – it looks gorgeous. Actually, the visuals of Project Lambda are so much better than those of Black Mesa (another shot at reviving Half-Life by porting it to Source engine; the project spent 6 years in Early Access already – and still hinges to it), you can easily confuse the latter with 1997 Half-Life.

Porting all of Half-Life to Unreal Engine 4? That would take… a considerable amount of time.

And lastly – Project Lambda carries on. The team does not give up and is more than determined to deliver a second part of their “demo” sometime in the future. Who knows, maybe one day – certainly before the release of Half-Life 3 – we will see Grodon Freeman killing headcrabs in his UE4-infused HEV suit?
