With This Special Mode Sea Depths in Horizon Forbidden West No Longer Terrify [UPDATE]

A new story DLC has arrived for Horizon: Forbidden West. A special mode has also been introduced to the game to improve the gameplay experience for some players.

Update #1: The first reviews of the Burning Shores DLC for the action adventure game Horizon Forbidden West have appeared online. The average on Metacritic is currently 80/100 (based on 5 texts). Critics note that it's simply more of the same, yet with new story threads, maps, mechanics and enemies, the gameplay is varied enough to justify a purchase and approach the continuation of Aloy's story with enthusiasm.

Today marks the release of Burning Shores - a major story expansion to last year's Horizon: Forbidden West by Guerrilla Games. The debut is accompanied by a fresh update, marked 1.21.

Interestingly, among general performance improvements and support for DLC, the latest patch introduces a special mode designed to improve the fun for some players.

Fear of the deep sea

In a nutshell, thalassophobia is an irrational fear of the sea, the ocean and the deep. Importantly in the context of video games, this fear can be triggered not only by actual bodies of water, but also those observed on monitor screens. The universality of this phenomenon was mentioned more than once by gamers, experiencing it in such games as Subnautica.

To remedy the discomfort the players feel, Guerrilla Games has prepared a special mode to minimize the negative effects of thalassophobia.

As we read in the official post on Reddit, enabling the mentioned option:

  1. will improve underwater visibility;
  2. will deprive the game of the mechanics of running out of oxygen.

It is worth noting that games released by Sony's in-house studios have a proud tradition of introducing numerous accessibility options. For example, let's take last year's God of War: Ragnarok.

Burning Shores DLC

The new expansion takes players to the archipelago of islands of the Tenakth clan, located on the ruins of the former Los Angeles and torn by years of volcanic activity. Aloy is forced to travel to this hostile land to face a big threat.

The DLC introduces a number of new mechanics and variety to the title. Among them, it is worth mentioning Waterwing - the main character's mechanical mount, thanks to which she will explore both the depths of the ocean and break through the clouds remodeled for the purposes of the DLC.

The combat system has also undergone a slight change. Aloy's arsenal will include a new skill, enabling her to jump on fallen enemies to deliver the finishing blow.

Content of Burning Shores is available to players who have completed the storyline of the base game.

The DLC is priced at $19.99. Unfortunately, the DLC is available only for the PlayStation 5 version of the game.
