FX's new series is getting great reviews and is popular with viewers hungry for good stories of great scope. Shogun, an adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name, shows a story set in Japan during the late Sengoku period, when Portugal was at the height of its influence in the region. It's the story of an English navigator, John Blackthorn, who arrives in Japan when an internal power struggle is taking place.

Due to the location and the backgrounds of most of the characters, much of the dialogue is in Japanese. Of course, John and his crew, since they are English, communicate with each other in English, and when the characters speak to each other in Portuguese or any other language except Japanese, the dialogues are also in English. But when Japanese is used, we actually hear this language, and people who don't know it can rely on subtitles for such scenes.

Can the Shogun TV series be watched in English?

However, there is another solution for Hulu users. English dubbing is available on the platform, so you can watch the entire series exclusively in English. Just select the right option on the menu on Hulu and enjoy the fully English version of the series. However, the creators decided to bring the Japanese language into their production for a reason. This makes Shogun a more immersive experience, so if subtitles aren’t a problem for you, it's worth giving the original version of the TV series a chance.
