Larian Pays a Touching Tribute to Baldur's Gate 3 Player Suffering From Alzheimer's

One of Baldur's Gate 3's scriptwriters, in creating a certain character, was inspired by the story of a father and son who together awaited the release of the game, despite the illness of one of them.

Most of the players who started their adventure with Baldur's Gate III, would probably agree that the game's narrative layer shows true devotion of its creators and can easily evoke strong emotions. It turns out that in addition to this, the game hides a touching mystery that goes beyond this fantastic universe.

Thanks to posts on X/Twitter a wider range of Internet users had the opportunity to learn about the unusual story of one of the NPCs in Baldur's Gate III, which was shared by a user of the official Larian Studios forum. In September 2023, a fan of the game known as Solfalia published a post addressed to the developers, in which he expressed his gratitude for honoring his Alzheimer's-afflicted father:

The story behind Golbraith began when the first act of BG III was made available in October 2020, as part of early access. This allowed Solfalia to play the latest installment of the series together with his father, with whom he had shared a fondness for both Larian Studios' works and the first two "Baldurs" for years.

The player decided to show his gratitude to the developers for the earlier opportunity to test the latest Baldur's Gate due to his parent's progressive illness. The message found its way to one of the game's scriptwriters, who took the initiative to include a reference to the ailing fan in the game's final version.

Solfalia immediately accepted the proposal from the anonymous "super author," although until the release of BG III he did not learn its details.

The appearance, dialogue lines and collection of letters of the inconspicuous NPC turned out to be inspired by a real person. In this way, one of the employees of Larian Studios probably gave one of the best surprises to the two loyal fans, and ultimately also touched hundreds of thousands of other players who learned about his gesture.

An even more positive punchline to the story, however, is that Golbraith's original didn't let the disease win and thus had the opportunity to learn that his struggle was immortalized in the universe of Baldur's Gate. The story about his guest "appearance" in the game was listened to by the man himself, when residing in a nursing home, with a smile on his lips, something not seen very often lately.
