The latest big update for The Long Dark survival sandbox game implements a new type of shelter, progression system as well as two extra game modes.
The Long Dark alpha has just received a major game update called Penitent Scholar (v.346). The key new features are: snow shelter, skill system, two game modes, and player progression. They are discussed by Hinterland Studio in this video:
You can now quickly construct a snow shelter, which can help you survive the night while out in the wild. However, it isn’t 100% secure, because a hungry bear may pull you out of the hideout while you’re sleeping. This option may come in handy across two new game modes: Nomad and Whiteout. The former is about surviving 10 days, each set in a different region. On the other hand, Whiteout gives you 30 days to gather enough supplies before a huge blizzard arrives.
Another important novelty is a system of skills unique to each character (so when they die, the skills are gone). Performing an action or engaging in activity improves the associated ability, as does reading certain books. Moreover, Penitent Scholar update implements player progression system, called Feats. The basically work like bonus-granting achievements – once you unlock them, they become available across all your future playthroughs.
Beside these major new features, there is a whole bunch of smaller changes and fixes, which you can read about on Hinterland’s official forums.
