Atomfall is full of secrets. If you have played it for as little as an hour you know what I mean. We start as a person with amnesia, and it gets only weirder. The moment we leave the bunker we hear a phone ringing and after answering it, a mysterious voice orders us to kill Oberon… Who is he/she/it/they? Let’s answer this question together.

What is Oberon in Atomfall, history explained

It goes without saying, but you are about to read some heavy spoilers. Proceed at your own risk.

Let’s start a few hundred years before the beginning of Atomfall. Oberon is not a person but a meteorite which hit the Earth in the past. It is unknown when it was exactly, but in one of the conversations Dr Garrow states that it happened around Shakespeare’s time, which is roughly between 1564 – 1616.

Interestingly, the game mentions Kepler’s Star. It was a supernova (explosion of a star), which was so strong, that it was visible to the naked eye on our planet. And you know what? It took place in 1604, so during Shakespeare’s life. Coincidence? Unlikely, if you ask me. I believe it is implied that those events are connected.

Is Oberon dangerous?

The meteorite was hidden in the ground for a long time. It was not until a few years before Atomfall’s events that miners stumbled upon it. It was soon discovered that Oberon – by the way it is the name of a king of fairies in medieval / Renaissance literature and in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream – has some unique properties and scientists started experimenting with it.

Unfortunately, the meteorite was only a shell for something else – fungus and its spores. Of course, scientists have released them during tests and… the apocalypse began. As you may already know (or not), Oberon’s spores like humans quite a lot and can turn them into mindless husks. Well… not completely mindless. As it seems that Oberon has some telepathic powers and can influence surrounding to some extent, people included (miners hearing voices).

Oberon must die?

So, the question arises – what to do with this entity? You can either save its life or kill it. The creature, if we may call it that way, wants to subjugate people in order for them to get back to a more primitive way of life, without technology. At least it seems that way if we look at druids and their faction. Its spores and disease which they cause are also a serious problem. If uncontrolled, they can bring an end of our world. On the other hand, destroying the meteorite will cause a great blow to science and possible progress. The choice is yours. However, if you wish for the fungus to die once and for all, there is only one ending which can guarantee you that. We describe it in a dedicated guide. Good luck.
