Pentiment - Who Killed the Baron? Is there a right choice?

In this article we will discuss the death of the Baron and address the question of his murderer. We will say who the culprit is. Beware of spoilers!

Pentiment is an adventure game in which you solve a mystery. Your choices matter, so make them wisely. The first case you must undertake is to find the murderer of Baron Lorenz of Rothvogel. However, there are several suspects and it is not clear which one killed him. In this article we will tell you who killed the baron.

Further reading of this article involves learning about spoilers. We have not bolded the information in it so that it does not accidentally catch the eye of a person who has strayed. The first paragraph below deals directly with the case of the Baron's death, so there are slight spoilers in it. The next one, on the other hand contains end-game information. Feel warned.

Minor spoilers

The first mystery presents you with several suspects: Ottila Kemperyn, Sister Matilda, Lucky Steinauer, and Prior Ferenc. Due to limited time, you cannot expect to fully interrogate everyone and find out the necessary information about them. So you have to make some choices that will lead to someone's death. If you want to know which suspect is the right one, I have to worry you - the game does not answer this question. You will never find out who is really behind the murder. However, you can find out the identity of the person who masterminded the whole thing.

Heavy spoilers

If you make it to the end of the game, you will get to know the person responsible for all the events happening around you. Keep in mind that you're in for further spoilers from the end of the adventure.

Towards the end of the game, you can find out who is the writer of mysterious messages - it is Sister Amalie. However, she is not the person responsible for them. She was persuaded to write them by Father Thomas. He is the one who has been pulling the strings all along in an attempt to hide a secret.
