Rainbow Six: Siege to get a 42 GB patch

The next update for Rainbow Six: Siege is going to be a big one. While varying in size across platforms, the Ultra HD version of the patch will weigh 42 GB on PC.

This is some kind of record, right? Ubisoft has announced that the next update to Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege is going to be a huge one – ranging from 15 GB to 42 GB, depending on the platform. Xbox One PlayStation 4 versions will get the “small” one, weighing 15 GB. As for the PC, the patch will weight 26 GB or 42 GB with Ultra HD textures. Those sizes are currently only estimations and thus may change, but they’re still impressive.

Why is the Y2S3.0 update so big? Ironically, this is to save space. The patch will make changes to how game data is organized, which requires a lot of files replaced. This will result in reducing the overall size of the game and of all future updates as well as speeding up loading times (up to 10% on consoles).

The developer is also going to upgrade the texture quality across all graphical settings on PC, which resulted in “a slight increase in quality for character textures and a significant increase for environment texture quality”. Players who own a computer with 6 GB VRAM on board will be able to download the Ultra HD version of the patch, which offers even better environment textures.
