Sky: Children of the Light is an adventure game with social elements, similar to previous creations of thatgamecompany. Many players were captivated by this idea and came back to get more of a simple but cute aesthetic that creators of Journey are known for. As the title is still in preview phase on PC, there are issues to be expected. If you can’t even start the demo, there are some things that can be done in order to fix it. We’ve gathered all the information that you may need.

Sky Children of the Light demo won’t launch explained

Sky CotL has already found its way on mobile devices, as well as on Switch and PS4. The developers would like to share their creation with a broader audience, and they decided to port it to computers. The release date is not yet confirmed, though it is possible to try out the game’s demo. This can be problematic, as there are many players reporting issues with simply launching the game.

As usual, the community got together on Steam forums to discuss the possible causes of this problem. It has been correctly pointed out that Sky CotL was initially released on mobile devices, and it requires Vulkan API in at least version 1.3 to function properly.

As a quick reminder, Vulkan is an API (Application Programming Interface) that allows a graphics processor to “talk” with the game and display the desired scenes. On PC, DirectX is commonly used, though Vulkan is also getting more presence. That being said, only Vulkan is supported on mobile devices, as DirectX is a proprietary technology of Microsoft and only available on Windows and Xbox platforms.

Changing an API would require additional, unnecessary workload for developers, so logically they stick to what they have originally implemented.

Since Sky: Children of the Light requires Vulkan API in version at least 1.3 installed on your system. To check what version you currently have installed, follow the steps below:

  1. Open command prompt (right click on windows logo on your taskbar or press “Windows + X” keys on your keyboard),
  2. Select Command Prompt (Windows 10) or Terminal (Windows 11),
  3. Type “vulkaninfo” (without quotation marks) and press enter,
  4. Scroll to the top of the window, where you will see line entitled “Vulkan Instance Version”.

Please bear in mind that we are not the developers behind any of the tools or technologies mentioned in this article and we take no liability of any issues that you may experience using them. You are doing it at your own risk. For more help, please contact the developers of the software.

If the version, you have currently installed is higher than 1.3.XXX you should be good to go. Otherwise check if your graphics card supports Vulkan in version 1.3 or higher. You can check it on Vulkan’s official page here. If yes, go ahead and update your graphics card drivers. If it is still not working, many players have suggested clean reinstallation of the drivers. There are tools that can help you with that like DDU.
