Many people are comparing The Expanse: Osiris Reborn to Mass Effect, which makes the game's developers very happy. However, they point out that it will not be a clone of BioWare studio's hit RPG series.
Announced during this year's Future Games Show, the RPG game The Expanse: Osiris Reborn immediately evoked strong associations with the Mass Effect series from the very first moment. The creators at Owlcat Games are clearly inspired by BioWare games, but they also look to other titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Persona 5.
Recently, Polygon conducted an interview with the creative director of Osiris Reborn, Alexandre Mishulin. During the conversation, the dev admitted that he happily accepts all comparisons with Mass Effect, although he is aware that this raises players' expectations for the new game from Owlcat Games studio.
First of all, [we feel] humbled. Mass Effect is a great inspiration for us because it’s an iconic game for [the] Xbox 360 generation, and a lot of [Owlcat] team members played it in their youth. We’re inspired by it. Some [people] get into the industry of making games because they saw [Mass Effect] and were inspired and decided for themselves they want to do something similar, or just make games, as a living. So it would be impossible to deny that Mass Effect has [had] a lot of impact on us as game developers.
However, he noted that despite these inspirations, Osiris Reborn will significantly differ from BioWare's space opera. Mishulin noted that many years have passed since the release of the ME trilogy, and the industry has changed a bit during this time.
Other systems were introduced, players [are] now accustomed to a lot more convenient user interfaces, convenient approaches to the gameplay, and we are doing that and not, like, modernizing Mass Effect, but just making a game in the same genre but with all the modern trappings.
Owlcat Games also takes a different approach to their RPG than BioWare does in Mass Effect, especially when it comes to story. Mishulin announced that in Osiris Reborn there will be more choices and consequences, not just limited to good and evil, and will offer players a lot of freedom to act.
He also emphasized the great emphasis on details, such as the origin of the characters, which will affect how NPCs will view the main character. For example, if you play as an Earther or a Martian, you won't be welcome on Ceres, but if you play as a Belter, you'll be more respected there, which will give you extra opportunities and side missions.
But on the other hand, if you [are] of another origin, there will be other opportunities and other places for you [to explore].
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is heading to PC, PS5, and XSX/S. The release date isn't known yet.
