Released last year on PS5, Stellar Blade turned out to be quite a success - it exceeded the sales expectations of the developers and gained extraordinary recognition from players. The PC version available since last Thursday has further strengthened its position.
So it's no surprise that such a big success prompted the devs to start working on a sequel, as we learned from a recent Shift Up's financial report. Now, the CEO of the studio, Kim Hyung Tae, has given an interview to This Is Game, in which he talked a bit about plans for the sequel.
The creator of Stellar Blade wants the second installment to be released in 2027, but the game is still in the research and development phase, so it's not certain. The team was originally working on DLC, but it grew so much that they decided to turn it into a sequel instead. At the moment, progress in the work is not too great, as the focus has been on the PC version of the original.
It would be great if it came out in 2027, but there are only three years left, so I can only say that we'll do our best. But I can guarantee that it'll be a great game.
Kim admitted that the plot of Stellar Blade was somewhat poor due to development limitations. The team had to give up many cutscenes due to their high costs and limit themselves in this aspect solely to the main plot.
Furthermore, it was planned to implement many more plot details, for instance, an explanation of why Eve changes outfits. According to Kim, the whole story is also quite clichéd, as it addresses the commonly occurring theme of the relationship between AI and humanity.
The dev assured that the sequel will focus on slightly more serious themes and will be characterized by significantly improved narration.
Fun fact: the director of Stellar Blade also threw down a challenge to modders. Kim generally has a very positive approach to mods, and there is no shortage of them in his game. However, he noted that currently these are mainly new outfits, and he would like to see something bigger in the future.
Modders' firepower is still weak. It's a little lacking. So far, I think official content is still better. […] Of course, mods such as new costumes and monster visuals are cool, but it would be great if there was a mode that expanded the user's play experience.
Time will show whether the modders will take up the gauntlet and create more ambitious projects, or if they will only stick to creating new outfits for Eve.
