Update #2

The first reviews of the game have appeared online. So far, OpenCritic has collected four of them, and the average of the scores is 75/100.

Three reviewers consider Return to Moria a satisfying survival game, but without anything particularly good (although for fans of Tolkien's universe the title may have additional value), and Augusto A. of Niche Gamer even called it "an extremely solid survival title that can confidently be considered one of the best Lord of the Rings games, as well as one of the best games of 2023."

Update #1

The game is now available on Epic Games Store. At the same time, its launch trailer has hit the web:

Original news

The Lord of the Rings fans may get a new reason to rejoice today, as a new adventure in the world created by Tolkien will go on sale. The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will be available on Epic Games Store, and in some time it will also be released for owners of current-generation consoles.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria launches today

Free Range Games' work is still available for pre-order. The official launch will probably take place later today.

  1. On the web, we won't yet find any reviews of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria (Metacritic remains empty), so it is difficult to determine what to expect from this game.
  2. The work of Free Range Games is a third-person survival game. The game takes on the story of dwarves who want to reclaim their home - Moria. Let's note that the game is to offer multiplayer and co-op mode.
  3. For fans of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy there is also a treat. Some time ago, the developers showed the game;s intro. It features John Rhys-Davies, who played the dwarf Gimli in Peter Jackson's adaptations, as the narrator.

According to the original plans the game was also scheduled to be released today on PlayStation 5, but a few days ago the developers informed of a change in the release date on Sony's console to fine-tune various aspects of the release. New debut date for The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria on PS5 has been set for December 5. On the other hand, the game should hit the Xbox Series X/S next March.

It's not the only Lord of the Rings game this year

Return to Moria is not the only game set in the universe of The Lord of the Rings, which debuted this year. Fans can still try out The Lord of the Rings: Gollum from Daedalic Entertainment. You must remember, however, that the title received very poor reviews. On Steam it has only 38% positive reviews (out of 704 issued).

It is worth mentioning that Weta Workshop has been working for some time on a game that tells the story of the lives of hobbits - Tales of the Shire. As of yet, we have not learned the release date for this title.
