The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an action adventure game set in the Lord of the Rings universe. It was developed by the German Daedalic Entertainment studio, famous for their work on the Deponia series.

Plot

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is set between J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books. The game tells the story of Smeagol - better known as Gollum - after his encounter with Bilbo Baggins. In search of the thief who stole his precious ring, Smeagol wanders all the way to Mordor. Once there, however, he's captured by the Dark Lord's minions. Now, he must escape them and get back to safety.

TheSixthAxis: 1 / 10 by Gareth Chadwick

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was conceptually a game with some promise, but from what I've seen so far, it's a mediocre and messy experience that doesn't really come together into a cohesive whole. That is, of course, before coming to the bugs, the crashes and the game-breaking progression issues that make it impossible to complete at this time. Considering that I was actually looking forward to this, this one really stings.

A strong sense of character is let down by poor controls, fiddly implementation, and bugs.

IGN: 4 / 10 by Justin Koreis

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is filled with dull stealth, bad platforming, and a pointless story, and does little to justify why anyone should take the time to play it.

  • Meaningful Choices: Some reviews mentioned that the choices between Gollum and Smeagol did not have significant impacts on the story or gameplay, making the decision-making feel inconsequential.
  • Combat Mechanics: The absence of a robust combat system was noted, with many players wanting more action-oriented gameplay rather than just stealth and platforming.
  • Customizable Graphics Settings: A lack of options for adjusting graphics settings for better performance was highlighted, particularly for players on lower-end systems.
