“This is crazy?” Orlando Boom almost squandered his great opportunity that was Pirates of the Caribbean
Orlando Bloom almost didn't appear in Pirates of the Caribbean because he didn't understand the concept of basing the movie on a theme park ride.

Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean are two film series that have significantly pushed Orlando Bloom's career forward, however, if the actor had trusted his own instincts, one of the series would not have been in his filmography. The idea of creating a film based on an amusement park ride simply didn't occur to Bloom, which meant that the option of starring in it didn't excite him.
He talked about his doubts about starring in Pirates of the Caribbean during an interview with L'Officiel.
My agent said, “Disney wants to make a movie based on a theme park ride”, and I was like, “This is crazy?”
Orlando Bloom was hesitant to accept the offer. He received it just when he was in the middle of shooting Ned Kelly in Australia. In that production he starred alongside Geoffrey Rush, whom he later met on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Unlike Bloom, Rush saw the potential of Pirates of the Caribbean and encouraged the actor to participate in the project, and when it was successful, Rush joked that Bloom “owes him 10 percent.”
So it's possible that if it hadn't been for Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom would have turned down the offer and wouldn't have played one of his most iconic roles – Will Turner, which made him famous, as well as popular with audiences. Pirates of the Caribbean, on the other hand, turned out to be an IP with enormous potential, given that there have already been five films in the series and Disney wants to further develop it, although it is currently figuring out how to do it.
