Will There Be a Dune Part Three? Denis Villeneuve Revealed Plans for a Continuation of The Series Starring Timothée Chalamet
Dune Part Two can already be watched in cinemas, but what about part three? Will it be created? Denis Villeneuve shared his plans for the future of the series.
Dune Part Two has finally arrived in cinemas after delighting reviewers. Now audiences can judge how they like the epic adaptation by Denis Villeneuve, in which we will learn the further fate of Paul Atreides played by Timothée Chalamet.
The two parts of Dune created so far are based on Frank Herbert's 1965 novel. There are also sequels to the book, in some of which Paul continues to be present, and as a result, fans are wondering if Villeneuve will decide to film sequels and, most importantly, a third part of Dune, which would include material from Dune Messiah.
Villeneuve, in an interview with Empire in 2023 (via The Hollywood Reporter), admitted that he would like to create a film trilogy of Dune, which would end with the story from Dune Messiah. The filmmaker isn’t interested in creating adaptations of further parts of Herbert's series.
He also doesn't want to get down to work on part three immediately after completing Dune Part Two and wrapping up its promotion, as he explained in an interview with Collider. For the second part, he was keen to create it as soon as possible after part one, but now he needs a break, during which he will take care of other projects. He also admitted that he needs this time to create the best possible film adaptation of Dune Messiah, so he doesn’t intend to rush with anything.
Now that there’s a Part Two , I just want to make sure that if we do Dune Messiah , that we have the best screenplay on the table. And for that, I want to take the time to do it. And I think it would be healthy that I don’t go back necessarily in the desert right away, that I make a little detour, maybe. But honestly, I don’t know what my future is right now, which I love because I worked the past six years nonstop. It’s a blessing, but I need that. It would be nice to make sure that if we do Dune Messiah , I want to make the best movie ever, so I want to just take my time.
For now, Warner Bros. Discovery hasn't greenlit Dune Part Three anyway, though it seems only a matter of time. The latest installment promises to be a hit on par with the part one.
