Xbox Series S Accused of Limiting Consoles; Accuser Vanishes From Internet

Xbox Series S is a potato - this is the opinion of a Rocksteady studio employee about Microsoft's device. It is the aftermath of recent reports about the limitations faced by Gotham Knights on all current-gen consoles.

To better understand the whole situation, we need to go back a few days, when the executive producer of Gotham Knights informedthat the title would run on current-gen consoles at just 30 frames per second. This was to be blamed on the game's demanding design and the presence of a co-op mode. As expected, the news caused quite a stir not only among owners of Sony and Microsoft devices.

Xbox Series S is a potato

One of the developers working at Rocksteady Studios (Batman: Arkgam Asylum and Batman: Arkham Knight) decided to take a stand in the defense of his colleagues and put the blame for the said limitations on the Xbox Series S console, the weaker and more budget version of Microsoft's new device. According to Lee Devonald - senior technical graphic designer for characters - "S-series" is not much better than the last-gen Xbox. In addition, He called it a "generation-hampering potato", and the biggest pain in the device is the GPU it uses (via Techspot).

"I wish gamers understood what 60fps means , in terms of all the things they *lose* to make the game run that fast. Especially taking into account that we have a current-gen console that's not much better than a last-gen one.. [...] [The problem is - en. note] Xbox Series S GPU mostly. Multi-platform games always have to optimise for the lowest performer. [...] The Series S exists though, and Microsoft won't let you launch on one without another. An entire generation of games hamstrung by that potato," Lee Devonald of Rocksteady Studios wrote.

Below you can see screenshots of the developer's message (via THE RED DRAGON).

Caused a storm and vanished

Interestingly, the man apparently noticed the stir his post caused, because immediately afterwards he apologized for his words and deleted his Twitter profile.

"When I started this thread, I wanted to explain, at least in a small part, the difficulties of game development. I failed to do so. I'm sorry that your expected title will not be exactly what you wanted. I'm sorry that I wanted to help you understand that developers give their best to create the best possible work," was the content of the last message.

Who is to blame?

Unfortunately, just from the example of Gotham Knights it is difficult to say who is more to blame for the aforementioned limitations - the "lazy" creators or the weak "XSS". And what do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Interestingly, the problem that console gamers will face in the near future does not only concern the game by WB Games Montreal. A Plague Tale: Requiem also suffers from the "disease" of 30 frames per second.

The release of Gotham Knights will take place on October 21. The title will be available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. If you are interested in the game but do not know whether your PC can handle it, we have posted the minimum system requiremenst here.

It is also worth mentioning that Gotham Knights will receive an update after its debut, which will add a cooperative mode to the game - called Heroic Assault.
