Seven The Days Long Gone: Why aren't my lockpicks working?
Last update:

Lockpicks are one of the most useful gadgets in Seven: The Days Long Gone. This is because the most valuable and the most important devices are inside of locked rooms and chests. There are some cases where this problem can be solved by stealing a key from a guard. However, you will have to rely on lockpicks most of the time.
Sadly, lockpicks have one very serious issue. You must upgrade them regularly because the "weakest" metal versions won't be enough to open more complicated locks. The game informs you that your lockpicks aren't good enough by displaying a cross out icon in the interaction menu - the picture above shows an example of that.

The first upgrade available for lockpicks is Polymer Lockpick Upgrade. In default, Teriel doesn't have an option to upgrade lockpicks, you will have to find schematics first. You can do that during "Sanctuary" main quest, after reaching the loading station which serves as Savaash's hideout. Kill the spiders and examine the area presented in the picture.

The problem here is that polymer lockpicks can't be crafted right away. You have to spend components and auryte first to upgrade crafting stations to level II (more details in Crafting chapter). You also need the right materials - 30 Polymer Basic Components and 50 auryte (see the picture).
Note - You don't need to craft additional lockpicks. The metal ones that are already in your inventory will simply become more effective.

The second upgrade is Techno Lockpick Upgrade. The best chance to get it is during "Down the Rabbit Hole" main quest. The last objective of this quest is to investigate Blackwood Manor located in Warden's Hold. Examine the manor very carefully (you should do that while wearing a Blackwood Guard disguise). The schematic is in the place presented in the picture above (the east part of the manor).

Get the schematic and visit any of the crafting stations. Sadly, this version of lockpicks requires a level III crafting station. The upgrade's requirements are 30 Techno Basic Components and 100 auryte (see the picture).
