Cyberpunk 2077 loses key developers

There have been some high-rank personnel changes in CD Projekt RED, the studio developing Cyberpunk 2077. Last month, the team parted ways with its Lead Level Designer, Senior Gameplay Producer, Project Manager, and Senior Art Producer – all of them experienced game designers, and all working on the company’s next big RPG. Although we aren’t saying there is a reason to worry about Cyberpunk 2077’s future, the fact that all of them left the studio at the same time may indicate some inner crisis.

Thieves threaten to reveal Cyberpunk 2077 documents

Thieves claim to have stolen Cyberpunk 2077 documentation and are demanding a ransom so they would not post the files online. CD Projekt RED does not intend to yield to the thieves’ demands and says that the documents come from an early version of their game and are thus outdated and unrepresentative of the current vision of the game. Nevertheless, should the files really emerge online, the studio advises players not to pay too much attention to them so as not to spoil the experience with the game in any way.

CD Projekt wants to trademark the term "cyberpunk"

It seems that CD Projekt, the owner of the Witcher video game franchise and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, wants to secure trademark rights for the term “cyberpunk”. A Reddit user shared a screenshot of the trademark application dated November 3, 2016 as well as an interesting comment reportedly made by Bruce Bethke, the American author who coined the term. Assuming the remark is authentic, he has confirmed that every few years there is someone trying to trademark the word “cyberpunk”, but these attempts always fail due to a large number of titles using it.

Cyberpunk 2077 likely out by June 2019

We are likely to play Cyberpunk 2077, the next open-world RPG from The Witcher 3 creators, within the next two years. A Reddit user dug out some interesting details about the conditions of the governmental grant that CD Projekt RED has recently received for several gaming technologies, including seamless multiplayer, cinematic feel, animation excellence and city creation. Although the title of the game was not specifically mentioned, we can safely bet that these projects are designed with a view to creating Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 may feature seamless multiplayer and a huge living city

Several grant applications made by CD PROJEKT RED for the development of Cyberpunk 2077 were accepted for consideration by GameINN. While it doesn’t necessarily mean that they all will be given the grant, the list of accepted projects gives a glimpse of what features are being seriously considered. It appears that for Cyberpunk 2077 CD Projekt RED is working on seamless multiplayer similar to what Watch Dogs 2 is going to offer. Another noteworthy feature is City Creation, a complex technology for creating huge, living, open-world cities.

Cyberpunk 2077’s development, because that’s what we’re talking about, has just been confirmed to engage more people than Geralt’s adventures could’ve ever dreamed of.
