8 Times When Developers Should Have Bit Their Tongue

Game developers are, of course, also humans. That's why strange statements and all sorts of slip-ups happen to them too. Especially when they feel defensive. We have aggregated a list of instances when they definitely said too much.

Table of Contents

"Do you guys not have phones?"

  1. Who said it? Wyatt Cheng, director of Diablo Immortal.
  2. Where and when? BlizzCon 2018

Diablo is a series that owes a lot to the PC platform. As does Blizzard itself. This is where it all started. And over the years this tradition was maintained. As a platform, PC took precedence in case of every game of the studio. This changed only with Overwatch, which was simultaneously released on consoles.

However, the PC has never been overlooked. Until the announcement of Diablo Immortal. Wyatt Cheng had to announce the project, and unfortunately it all didn't go very well. The announcement itself wasn't tragic. I mean, there was no enthusiasm from the audience. There was no conviction on the part of Cheng himself. His expressions said it all, even though he was definitely trying not to conceal his feelings. Every "enthusiastic" shout from him seemed to say "please take me off the stage." This is, of course, a mere surmise, but this material seems to confirm it.

Anyway, the memorable line wasn't uttered until the Q&A panel. One fan asked hosts if there were any plans to make Immortal playable on PC. The audience didn't like the answer that followed the question. "We don't plan to make a PC version," caused a collective groan from a dissatisfied audience. At this point, we shall return to the announcement itself. Before revealing the trailer for the new Diablo, Wyatt praised phones for providing us with better contact with loved ones. Because everyone has a phone and they don't go anywhere without it.

Therefore, in his words, Diablo Immortal must be a great game. Because you can play it where, when and with whom you want. Without limits. For this reason, it may seem, he was greatly surprised when it turned out that fans of Diablo (or Blizzard in general) would prefer to play on computers. As befits a game of this kind. It's Diablo, after all. We all know what mobile games look like. This series simply deserves better. Especially since Immortal has things that part three was missing. Wyatt Cheng decided to turn it into a joke, and it was then that he asked the legendary question: "Do you not have phones?" The whole incident deserves covering it with a veil of silence. The intentions have changed and today we can play this game also on PC. However, this doesn't mean the end of problems. Especially in the light of quite brutal microtransactions. Wyatt Cheng will suffer even more trying to protect them.
