Best games on Xbox Game Pass 2021 - Subscribe'n'play!

The dozens of great games in your Xbox Game Pass subscription represent hundreds - even thousands - of hours you'll spend in large open worlds or smaller, story-driven RPGs. Here are the best games on Xbox Game Pass.

Xbox Game Pass is certainly one of the best things that has happened to the gaming world. The idea of a subscription for access to full versions of many games, may not be particularly new, but you have to admit that Microsoft's service stands out from similar subscriptions offered by others. First, it offers a much greater variety of games from multiple development studios, making it not limited to just a few flagship brands. This way, we can count on more titles to check out, both new and older, each month.

What's more, if you choose the PC version of the service or the one that includes all the Ultimate options, you still get access to Electronic Arts' portfolio within their EA Play subscription. The main drawback of the Xbox Game Pass service, however, is that many games in the package are available only temporarily. From time to time, selected games disappear from the offer, so paying a subscription for many months ahead for a certain game is not a guarantee that we will always have access to it (except for titles by the Xbox Games Studios).

The vast selection of games in the Game Pass makes it possible to experience the "Netflix effect" when launching it for the first time, that is, to have a lot of trouble choosing a game to install and play. So we present you with a list of the top 15 titles worth checking out on the Xbox Game Pass service. However, take into account that some of them may be available only for PC and some – only for Xbox. You can find the information on that in boxes. It may also happen that, depending on when you read this article, some items may have already disappeared from the offer. Here's our list of best games on Xbox Game Pass, in random order.

Best Xbox Game Pass Games 2021

The following list obviously doesn't cover all the best games from the Xbox Game Pass service, especially since more titles are added every month. It's more of a basic starter list for first-time Xbox Game Pass subscribers, making it easy to pick out some great games to start with.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Released in: 2019

Developer: Asobo Studio

Genre: TPP action adventure game

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: a dark tale of the strength of family ties with Inquisition and rats in the background

What is A Plague Tale: Innocence?

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a rather unique TPP action game where the corridor-based gameplay with an emphasis on stealth always remains somewhat in the background of the narrative and interesting storyline. We play as Amicia – a teenage girl trying to save her seriously ill brother Hugo. Together with them, we set off on a distant and dangerous journey across medieval France, where the plague and the mad Inquisition are raging.

In addition to its unique theme and immersive story, A Plague Tale also stands out for its special technology of rendering thousands of rats on screen, which are one of the threats in Amicia and Huga's path. Two kids aren't really suited to spectacular fights against such an opponent, so we can expect a bit more clever ways to overcome obstacles here.

Why is it worth playing?

The game developed by the studio from France is one of those titles that you hear little about before release, but once you start playing it, it's more impressive than many advertised blockbusters. The plot is bound to suck you in from the very beginning. Players can feel great affection for the two main characters and root for them on every step of the way. The bond between the siblings is depicted in a brilliant way, making their fate affect the player's emotions more than once.

Moreover, A Plague Tale looks beautiful and is very atmospheric. You can see and feel the Middle Ages with each and every step. On your journey, you are bound to see castle ruins, a huge cathedral, and even a field after a recent battle. Each location impresses with its design and artistic execution. The gameplay is an interesting departure from other action games, as the kids can rely solely on cleverness or, at most, a slingshot. The ten hours or so needed to complete the game seem to be the optimal time not to abandon the game half way through, and at the same time feel the satisfaction of knowing the complete story.

Forza Horizon 4

Released in: 2018

Developer: Playground Games

Genre: car racing

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: supposedly the best open-world racing game

What is Forza Horizon 4 about?

Forza Horizon 4 is the next installment of the popular open-world car racer. This time, it offers a fairly condensed map of the UK – from the flat, green countryside to the rugged hills of Scotland and a couple of Edinburgh city streets. There are actually four maps, as the game offers a full season cycle for the first time, which changes on the server every few weeks. So depending on when you play Forza Horizon 4, you may find the landscape covered in snow, blooming all green, or embellished with golden leaves.

The gameplay itself is either about racing through the roads and back country of Britain during the eponymous festival, or free riding around the map, looking for collectibles and various side activities. Optionally, this can be accomplished with a crew of friends, as the game works with a permanent network connection by default. There is a really huge number of cars to choose from, because in the base version, we can count on more than 450 vehicles. Fans of tuning will be disappointed, however, because in this regard, Forza is much more modest, even compared to the Need for Speed series.

Why is it worth playing?

Aside from the eye-catching visuals, the selling point of the Forza series has always been the driving model. Appropriately accessible for beginners, while still being reasonably realistic, it makes the game a great bridge between arcade entertainment and more complex simulators. Despite being tailored to game pad controls and some diving assistances, it feels like you're driving a car, not sliding a soap over a piece of glass. The list of cars to get is also impressive, as with such a variety of makes, types and production years, everyone is sure to create their dream virtual garage.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Released in: 2014 (XOne) 2019 (PC)

Developer: 343 Industries / Splash Damage

Genre: FPP shooter

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: the iconic Xbox sci-fi shooter

What is Halo: The Master Chief Collection about?

The Master Chief Collection is a set of six games that allows you to get to know one of the most famous space sagas in the history of games, about the fate of the green-armored Master Chief and the war between humans and aliens from the Covenant. In the bundle, we get Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 4 and Halo 3: ODST and the prequel Halo : Reach (PC only).

The main element of each title is the story campaign, in which we complete various missions and tasks on alien planets, although it's also worth mentioning that the Halo series also features a great multiplayer mode, which used to reign supreme on the Xbox 360 console. All the games have been properly refreshed to look good on modern displays despite their age, with Halo Combat Evolved and Halo 2 getting a major graphics overhaul.

Why is it worth playing?

Halo is a true classic and a hero as iconic as Lara Croft, Sonic or Doom Marine. It may be nothing new to Xbox veterans, but with this collection, PC gamers finally have a chance to get acquainted with this one of the most famous game series. Master Chief's set plays a symbolic role on this list, because of the number of games in the bundle, as Game Pass subscription includes the latest installments, such as Halo 5: Guardians or the RTS spin-off Halo Wars. If you get involved in the adventures of the elite soldier, grow fond of the voice of Cortana or driving the Warthog – you're in for a treat and many, many hours of fun.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Released in: 2020

Developer: Asobo Studio

Genre: flight simulator

Platforms: PC (Xbox Series X/S in the future)

In a nutshell: relaxing air travel in the biggest sandbox ever

What is Microsoft Flight Simulator about?

It's probably the oldest active game series in history, spanning almost four decades. The last installment was released in 2006, so the newest Flight Simulator game is sort of a reboot of the iconic brand. The gameplay idea is simple – fly civilian aircraft from point A to B with realistic procedures and physics. Asobo, however, revolutionized the idea with the map that is covering absolutely the entire globe, with most of big and small airports that exist in the real world.

In addition, the simulator uses satellite imagery from the Bing map service, employing petabytes of data stored in the cloud, streamed on-the-fly for the current location. Thanks to this, in MFS you can not only admire the most beautiful places in the world, visit historical locations and sites, but also find your own home. And there are dozens of machines to choose from – ranging from small, light planes, to huge passenger jets.

Why is it worth playing?

Microsoft Flight Simulator is not a game for everyone, but certainly everyone should experience at least for a moment what Asobo prepared in their production. It's one of the prettiest games you'll see today, and it's also a true benchmark of PC performance. At the same time, the creators have made sure that complicated aviation issues are served in a simple and accessible way. The number of assists that can be enabled makes recreational flying manageable for anyone, and without a set of expensive joysticks.

Besides, it's hard to resist the opportunity to travel over your own house and see how the artificial intelligence algorithms created it, because it's certainly standing in the right place, and with the accuracy of GPS coordinates. The bitter pill to swallow, however, may be having to download and install over 160 GB of data that the current version of the game requires.

Gears 5

Released in: 2019

Developer: The Coalition / Black Tusk Studios

Genre: TPP shooter

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: the iconic TPP Xbox shooter

What is Gears 5 about?

It’s a continuation of the famous sci-fi shooter series with a TPP view and a great cover system. The main character is Kait Diaz, known from part four, who goes to the planet Sera to investigate the origin of the main enemy of humanity in Gears, namely, the Locust. The iconic Lancer rifle returns with its chainsaw mode and a ton of other guns useful for taking out the vermin you encounter. The entertainment is diversified by unique locations as well as sequences in semi-open stages, which we can traverse in a special sledge with a sail. The story campaign is complemented by a multiplayer mode, which allows for cooperative play and PvP clashes.

Why is it worth playing?

Just like Halo, Gears 5 is a part of another iconic Microsoft series that you should at least check out for yourself. The latest installment guarantees the best audio-visual experience, but it can also be an invitation to familiarize yourself with the previous Gears of War games, although many of them are only available in the console version. Each of them really offers plenty of action and extremely spectacular clashes with hordes of aliens. For dessert, there's the much more tactical spin-off Gears Tactics, in which battles against the Locust are set in a turn-based system, much like in the XCOM series .

SnowRunner

Released in: 2020

Developer: Saber Interactive

Genre: off-road simulator

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: the most addictive mud-crawler ever

What is SnowRunner about?

SnowRunner is the total opposite of Forza Horizon 4. Instead of shiny, fast coupes and sedans, we have tractors, trucks and huge trailers. It's not about going fast, it's about not getting stuck in the mud. And that usually means going slower than molasses going uphill in January. There are almost no paved roads in SnowRunner, so any cargo delivery missions consist mainly of strenuous trudging through mud, swamps and rocky trails – it’s utterly addictive.

On top of realistic gearbox and engine control, it is essential to know how to use the winch, and how to navigate the wilderness. The gameplay is enhanced by very nice, nearly photorealistic visuals and some impressive driving, mud, and terrain physics. The ground deforms under the weight of vehicles and cargo. All this means that driving slowly is a real adventure.

Why is it worth playing?

SnowRunner offers a very different type of gameplay than most games. Demanding, testing patience, sometimes giving a taste of defeat, but at the same time extremely relaxing and cozy. There is no plot or characters to focus on – just the machines and another mile to go. Instead, there is a sort of economic theme, and our progress allows us to purchase more vehicles and customize them with numerous parts, both cosmetic and performance-oriented. Varied maps and hidden secrets encourage players to drive even more. Besides, the developers are constantly expanding the game and adding new challenges to it, should someone have already completed all the previous ones.

Control

Released in: 2019

Developer: Remedy Entertainment

Genre: sci-fi shooter with TPP view

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: a mysterious building, a twisted plot and X-Files-like stories

What is Control about?

Control is a new production from the creators of the famous Max Payne . So we can expect well-executed TPP shooting gameplay and extraordinary storyline. And indeed – both of these things do their job in Control! We are equipped with a unique, futuristic gun with endless ammunition and powers such as telekinesis or levitation. All this sits perfectly with the story, in which we suddenly become the director of the Federal Bureau of Control. Moving through the successive rooms of the organization's headquarters, players have to explain the strange and mysterious events that took place behind the walls of the agency.

Why is it worth playing?

Control intrigues from the very first moments with its extremely mysterious atmosphere. Everything is intensely surreal and strange. We walk through the concrete interiors of a gloomy office building, where not only the silence and emptiness intensify the dense atmosphere, but also the arrangement of the rooms changes before our eyes. The game draws you in with both exploration, through which you learn more pieces of the story, and the gameplay itself. Shooting enemies is mixed with finding new passages, and the main missions are complemented by interesting side quests. It's certainly one of the most original games you'll find on Game Pass.

Doom Eternal

Released in: 2020

Developer: id Software

Genre: FPP shooter

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: meaty demon extermination

What is Doom Eternal about?

A long time ago, Doom started the craze for FPP shooters. The 2016 reboot of the brand was a huge success, so a sequel was only a matter of time. Doom Eternal refers to the 1994 classic Doom 2: Hell on Earth and at the same time develops ideas from its predecessor. So we'll have to traverse the levels of earthly metropolises overrun by forces from hell, and visit completely alien worlds, with a completely surprising appearance.

Doom Eternal offers extremely dynamic gameplay and interesting mechanics, in which changing weapons constantly guarantees staying alive longer and having access to ammunition supplies. The movement options have also been greatly expanded, adding some sort of platforming elements to the battles. Thanks to them, you can get to secret locations with hidden collectibles and challenges. The new Doom also sheds some light on the plot of this primarily action-oriented series.

Why is it worth playing?

It's hard to find a more satisfying slaughterhouse of filthy demons. Doom may be brutal, but there's undeniable cartoonish quality about that brutality, and what comes to the fore is the rather remarkable flow of combat combined with an excellent range of possible moves. Each clash with a horde of classic doom enemies resembles a ballet of death, in which successive shots and finishers seem to be some sort of well-rehearsed arrangement. The design of the levels and the pulsating soundtrack complete the list of pros for one of the best shooters of recent years. Mostly veterans of the series can complain, but only because of the platforming elements and greater emphasis on the story.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Released in: 2020

Developer: Moon Studios

Genre: platformer

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: a classic platformer with beautiful, fairy-tale-like visuals

What is Ori and the Will of the Wisps about?

It's the continuation of the extremely well-received game Ori and the Blind Forest. Once again, we take on the role of the titular Ori spirit, only this time to travel beyond the forest into an extraordinary game world. While traversing the twisted mazes, players will encounter both enemies and allies. The levels are built according to the rules of the metroidvania genre, meaning that some passages become accessible only later in the game, after finding a way to open them. Our character also develops his abilities by learning new spells and forms of attacks, but the difficulty level is not as high as in the first part.

Why is it worth playing?

Ori delights with its beautiful, hand-drawn visuals, which, combined with the soundtrack, create a captivating atmosphere. It also comes with an engrossing narrative that builds the story, and is able to trigger a whole range of different emotions. The gameplay, on the other hand, still poses a good challenge, even for platforming veterans, so completing the game still gives a lot of satisfaction. Against all odds Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a full-fledged game, and not just a show of pretty, colorful pictures.

Desperados III

Released in: 2020

Developer: Mimimimi Games

Genre: real-time strategy

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: A top-down western in a tactical version

What is Desperados III about?

A prequel to the real-time strategy series set in the Wild West. The gameplay is based on the scheme known from the Commandos series, that is, controlling your characters by observing them from above. Cunning and stealth are often more important than attacking head-on. The main character is a gunslinger John Cooper, known from the previous parts, but this time we will witness the events preceding the previous Desperados installments. His band comprises extremely colorful characters, each one with some special abilities that help to complete subsequent missions. The gameplay is facilitated by an active pause useful for giving the characters appropriate orders.

Why is it worth playing?

Desperados III is a return to a now somewhat forgotten genre in a big way. The gameplay allows a different approach to the challenges we face, and the locations impress with their designs. The characters are also brilliantly portrayed, and even though the whole thing doesn't look very cinematic, their distinct attitudes play the first role here. The game is dripping with the Wild West atmosphere, which is emphasized by the excellent soundtrack. If there's anything to complain about, it's only the behavior of the artificial intelligence of the enemies.

The Medium

Released in: 2021

Developer: Bloober Team

Genre: horror adventure / walking simulator

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

In a nutshell: almost like Silent Hill

What is The Medium about?

The Medium is a horror that scares with its atmosphere, mood, and disturbing images instead of cheap jump scares or excessive brutality. It tells the story of the eponymous medium, a person who can contact the spirit world. As Marianne, we arrive at an abandoned holiday resort in the south of Poland to look for clues of a mysterious girl who is the subject of the protagonist's nightmares.

The developers opted for a fairly old-school locked camera mechanic, making the action look a bit more cinematic. However, this comes at the expense of freedom of movement, and performing different actions can be a bit annoying at times. An interesting innovation, on the other hand, is the idea of dividing the screen into two worlds: a real and spiritual one, with simultaneous gameplay in both dimensions. This allowed the developers to introduce interesting solutions to environmental puzzles. On the plus side, there’s great graphic design and an extremely atmospheric music co-composed by the author of the soundtrack to the Silent Hill series.

Why is it worth playing?

The Medium may not be a dynamic game offering rich gameplay mechanics, and it's closer to the so-called walking simulators, but it more than makes up for everything with its unusual atmosphere. The camera work, the way the locations look like, and the mysterious and engrossing storyline make you enter the world of The Medium with full immersion. The scares here are subversive enough that they don't turn us away from the screen. The terror here is built by the atmosphere itself, which is more intriguing than frightening, even though the images are sometimes very disturbing, as they’re based on t. The Medium is an engaging, interactive film that does just enough to be called a game without being a stretch.

No Man's Sky

Released in: 2016

Developer: Hello Games

Genre: space sandbox

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: a chance to become a space explorer

What is No Man's Sky about?

No Man's Sky is a space adventure that lets you feel a bit like an explorer of new worlds. The procedurally generated universe and its planets will take us to different corners of the cosmos each time. On your way, you're bound to meet various creatures, and sometimes representatives of alien races. No Man's Sky also featured crafting, trading, and missions you have to complete. The game places a strong emphasis on exploration and survival, allowing you to almost endlessly play as a space farer.

Why is it worth playing?

Recommending this game a few years ago, right after its release would have come off as quite a joke or lack of understanding of the gaming industry. No Man's Sky launched in a terrible condition, and there was virtually nothing of the content promised by the developers. Fortunately, the studio did not abandon the game and for a long time conscientiously repaired all the shortcomings, also adding a lot of new content. Today, it's a completely different production in which the fans of solitary, casual gameplay should find a lot of fun. And if anyone was discouraged during the release period, it's definitely worth giving the game a second chance now – especially when it's available in a Game Pass package.

NieR: Automata – Become as Gods Edition

Released in: 2017

Developer: Platinum Games

Genre: TPP action game with RPG elements

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: bizarre, Japanese, strange, but in many ways brilliant

What is NieR: Automata – Become as Gods Editionabout ?

You can’t talk about the best Xbox Game Pass games without NieR: Automata. It might seem as a typical action game, in which we mainly run, fight with a big sword or shoot from the deck of a small, maneuverable ship. The whole thing, however, is much deeper, as it's an artistic experience in which every element was carefully thought out by the rather eccentric creator Yako Taro. It's a unique game that not only mixes different gameplay mechanics from platformer to slasher, but also requires completing the game several times to learn all the secrets of the main storyline. And in a story about the struggle of warrior androids to reclaim Earth from space invaders, there are a lot of universal truths about human emotions and humanity.

Why is it worth playing?

It's probably hard to find a more amazing gaming adventure than NieR: Automata. Although the game world may seem a bit infantile and the visuals may scare away with their outdated setting, the real advantages of the production very quickly come to the fore. The fast-paced action and the camera perspective that changes now and then do not allow for boredom. Alongside this, the soundtrack is bound to catch your ear, and without exaggeration can be called one of the best ever.

We also quickly discover the depths of the characters we meet in their surreal little worlds, even if they are just robots in metal cans. Then it turns out that you have to play the game again, and again, but still you won't feel bored, because each playthrough reveals something new or shows events from a different perspective. And for the most persistent, there are a total of 26 endings, although most of them we will learn through some small clever tricks, without having to complete the game again.

Yakuza 0

Released in: 2015

Developer: SEGA

Genre: TPP action game

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: Japanese GTA

What is Yakuza 0 about?

The Yakuza series is the Japanese answer to the extremely popular Grand Theft Auto series. In their version of the game, players meet members of the local mafia – the Yakuza – in the open world of Tokyo and Osaka, with a lot of side activities and traditional for this country elements that may seem a bit strange, or even totally offbeat.

In Yakuza 0, we take on the role of two characters operating in the local underworld, taking turns directing them. The story is set in the 1980s. being a prequel to the other parts. It's worth noting that unlike GTA, we don't drive a car in Yakuza. Exploration takes place on foot, and dynamic shootouts are accompanied by spectacular duels using Eastern martial arts.

Why is it worth playing?

"Part zero" is a good way to start your adventure with the whole series, thanks to the fact that it shows the plot beginnings of the series. The game itself is also very well executed, although you have to keep in mind the specificity of Japanese productions. Absurd mini-games and endless cutscenes are just some of the differences from more traditional productions that should be expected. In return, Yakuza 0 delivers a great atmosphere of nightlife in Japanese metropolises, plenty of side activities, expressive characters and dynamic fight sequences.

What Remains of Edith Finch

Released in: 2017

Developer: Giant Sparrow

Genre: adventure / walking simulator

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, cloud

In a nutshell: a narrative masterpiece about death and passing

What is What Remains of Edith Finch about ?

What Remains of Edith Finch belongs to the so-called genre of "walking simulators." Gameplay mechanics are pushed into the background, and the main role is played by exploration and discovering the story in this way. In the game, we play as the titular Edith, who returns to her family home years later to uncover her family's secrets. The empty building hides rooms that were locked shortly after the deaths of its occupants. By visiting them and examining the memorabilia left behind, Edith learns a wealth of information about the lives of each household member, right up to their final days. Each such room represents unique gameplay mechanics and just the right dose of real excitement.

Why is it worth playing?

The game by Giant Sparrow studio is like an emotional bomb that you won't forget for a long time. It intrigues with its atmosphere and draws you in with the mysterious plot. Each visit to subsequent rooms is almost like a separate game due to the use of completely different artistic means and gameplay mechanics. Watching the action from a first-person perspective makes everything even more profound and allows us to empathize with the character's experiences. Despite a single playthrough just under three hours, it's hard to find another title that will stay in our minds as long.
