Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

  1. Release date: August 16
  2. Developer: Crystal Dynamics
  3. Genre: TPP action adventure game
  4. Platforms: PC Windows, PlayStation, Dreamcast

Soul Reaver was the second installment of the series - Legacy of Kain. In the sequel, we played as one of Kain's generals - Raziel. The protagonist falls out of favor with the envious chief, loses his powerful wings, and is cast into the abyss of the lake of the dead for eternal damnation. After hundreds of years, the god Elder releases Raziel to carry out his revenge on the ungrateful leader and his subordinates. And so begins a remarkably dark story in a quite interesting universe.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver received very favorable reviews. Critics praised the dark, Gothic atmosphere and impressive graphics - especially considering the standards of that time. The major advantage of the game was its challenging environmental puzzles, and the absence of a map made it a title primarily for hardcore gamers. Soul Reaver also delighted with the cutscenes and great voice acting. Some, on the other hand, noticed flaws such as repetitive gameplay, problematic camera, or elements forcing to guess "what the developers had in mind." Even then, many wrote about the game that it seemed "unfinished despite so many years of work."
