Middle Earth: Shadow of War is a sequel to a game called Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, a well-received open-world action game developed by an American studio called Monolith Productions. Similarly to the first installment in the series, the game described herein has been published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game picks up the story where its predecessor has left it; however, it introduces a number of changes and improvements in terms of the gameplay mechanics. This mainly regards the unique Nemesis system, which generates personalized adversaries, each with their own name, appearance, traits, and weaknesses. The game is available on PC Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, however, the PC Windows version of the game delivers the highest-quality visuals.

Plot

In the PC, PS4 and XONE release of Middle Earth: Shadow of War, the action is set right after the events shown in Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Yet again, a player gets to assume the role of an iconic duo - Talion, a Ranger of the North and Celebrimbor, a wraith and an astral form of an elf, who centuries ago forged the One Ring. The main protagonists decide to create one more ring, which in theory should provide them with power not only to gather a larger army but also defeat Sauron once and for all.

The main pros of the game

  • Nemesis System: The standout feature of the game, allowing for unique interactions with orc captains who remember past encounters, evolve, and can return for revenge. This creates emergent storytelling and memorable experiences.
  • Combat and Gameplay: The combat system is praised for its fluidity and depth, combining elements from other successful franchises like the Batman: Arkham series. Players enjoy the mix of action, stealth, and strategy, especially during fortress sieges.
  • Graphics and Atmosphere: The game is noted for its beautiful graphics and immersive world, effectively capturing the dark and gritty essence of Middle-earth.
  • Variety of Missions: There’s a good mix of side missions and collectibles that enhance the gameplay experience, allowing for exploration and engagement beyond the main story.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitiveness: Many players noted that the game can become repetitive over time, particularly in terms of enemy types and mission structures.
  • Story Weakness: The main storyline is often described as forgettable or lacking depth compared to the first game. Some players felt it took liberties with the established lore of the Lord of the Rings universe.
  • Grind and Progression Issues: Some reviews mentioned that the game requires excessive grinding, especially for leveling up orc captains and completing certain missions. The pacing can feel slow at times.

  • Better Story Closure: Many players wished for a more satisfying conclusion to the story and character arcs, particularly for Talion and Celebrimbor.

Summary

  • Overall, while Middle-earth™: Shadow of War™ is celebrated for its innovative Nemesis System and engaging gameplay, it also faces criticism for repetitiveness, story weaknesses, and some technical flaws.
