Another installment in the popular FPS franchise. Visceral Games, the studio known mainly for the excellent Dead Space sci-fi series, developed their first major installment in the long-standing Battlefield franchise. It's a result of the transition of the franchise to a two-year production cycle, similar to the one made by its competitor, Call of Duty.

Battlefield Hardline for PC, PS4 and etc. is the first installment of the subseries belonging to the Battlefield series of first-person shooters. Unlike the previous games, Visceral Games, the creators of space survival horrors – Dead Space, was tasked with the majority of development efforts, not, as it was before, the Swedish team at EA DICE.

Story

Battlefield Hardline for PC, PS4 and etc. abandons the traditional theater of war to the conflict of a different sort – the police struggle against organized crime. The player assumes the role of Nick Mendoza – a young detective from Miami who embarks on a personal vendetta throughout United States against his former partners whom the perspective of a fast buck drew the path of lawlessness. The structure of the plot is modeled on television series – it is divided into episodes often finished with plot twists. Detective sequences during which Nick collects evidence and identifies suspects are sort of enrichment. He may also take additional orders (e.g. eliminate wanted criminals) to earn extra money needed to buy new upgrades and weapons.

Action

The third DLC pack included in the Season Pass for Battlefield Hardline - a first-person shooter developed by Visceral Games and released in early 2015. Getaway brings neither changes to the gameplay mechanics, nor expanded content to the single player campaign. Instead, just as the two previous add-ons, it focuses on new multiplayer content. The main course are the four new maps: Pacific Highway, Double Cross, Train Dodge, and Diversion. The DLC also includes three new firearms for the Mechanic as well as one new melee weapon, a new gadget, four vehicles, and four legendary weapon camos. Another attraction is a brand new game mode called Capture the Bag, in which bandits try to get away with a bag full of stolen goods, and the police forces have to retrieve it.

Expansion

September 30, 2015

Action

The second expansion pack for Battlefield Hardline, developed by Visceral Games. The form of the second expansion remains unchanged; its main feature is the addition of several new multiplayer maps, namely The Docks, Museum, Break Point, and Precinct 7. Apart from that, a new game mode has been added - Squad Heist, which based on the Squad Rush mode from Battlefield 4. In this mode, ten players divided into two teams compete against one another. The robbers' goal is first to gather adequate tools, and then break into a specific, heavily-guarded place while grabbing everything they can take. The last part is the getaway. Of course, the cops' job is to prevent all of this from happening. The expansion pack also features four new weapons, two useful gadgets, new vehicles for both sides of the conflict, as well as previously unavailable camouflage types and car liveries.

Expansion

June 30, 2015

Action

The first official expansion pack for Battlefield Hardline. The DLC was created by the developers of the original Battlefield Hardline - Visceral Games. It focuses mainly on the multiplayer mode. With this expansion, the players receive four new maps: The Beat (an impoverished city district), Black Friday (a shopping mall), Code Blue (a nightclub), and Backwoods (an old sawmill turned into a drug factory). Moreover, the expansion introduces a new game mode called Bounty Hunter. This is a variation on the standard team deathmatch, which allows you to collect special coins dropped by defeated players. Using the coins, the players can, for example, lure one another into traps. This set of features is complemented by four new weapons, two new vehicles, and some new hats. Besides, the players can listen to some new songs when driving.

GamesRadar+: 3.5 / 5 by Ben Griffin

While it doesn't feel as vital as Battlefields past, inventive new multiplayer modes and a fresh, if slightly unfocused campaign make Hardline the worthy TV spin-off to DICE's big budget blockbusters.

Destructoid: 6 / 10 by Steven Hansen

While Hardline is tone deaf at times, mostly it is just deafening. Explosions and bombast are used not to distract from a troubling narrative as much as a stale one perfunctorily paced and reminiscent of network television emptiness.

GameSpot: 7 / 10 by Miguel Concepcion

As Battlefield leaves the battlefield, Visceral Games tailors the series' distinct vehicular-based multiplayer for the crime-ridden streets of Miami and L.A. with mostly positive results.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Single-Player Campaign: Many users praised the single-player story, describing it as engaging, akin to a crime TV series, and highlighted its unique narrative focused on cops and crime.
  • Graphics and Soundtrack: The game's graphics were generally considered impressive for its release year (2015), and the original soundtrack, including unexpected K-pop tracks, was well-received.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Players appreciated the incorporation of stealth mechanics, evidence collection, and the ability to arrest criminals, which added depth to the gameplay.
  • Fun Easter Eggs and Collectibles: Users enjoyed the fun easter eggs and the meaningful collectibles that enhanced the overall experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Not True to Battlefield Franchise: Many reviewers felt that Hardline deviated too much from the traditional Battlefield experience, likening it more to a standalone spin-off rather than a true Battlefield entry.
  • Multiplayer Issues: The multiplayer mode was criticized for being "dead" or lacking active players, with some users noting limited server availability.
  • Technical Issues: Several players reported problems with launching the game, including having to start it through a web browser, which was seen as a cumbersome design choice. Some also experienced crashes and other technical difficulties.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Lack of Traditional Battlefield Modes: Users noted the absence of classic Battlefield game modes, such as Conquest, which diminished the multiplayer experience.
  • Short Campaign Length: Some players found the single-player campaign to be too short, with only 10 episodes, leading to a sense of boredom after completion.
  • Expectation Management: There was a sentiment that the game would have been better received if it were marketed as a separate title rather than a new Battlefield game, suggesting a disconnect between player expectations and the actual content.

Summary

  • Overall, while Battlefield™ Hardline offers a unique and enjoyable single-player experience with strong graphics and engaging mechanics, it suffers from multiplayer shortcomings and technical issues that detract from its overall reception.
