Broken Sword Video Game Series
A series of adventure games, created and developed by Revolution Software studio under the direction of Charles Cecil. The brand is sometimes credited as one of the most successful in the history of the genre.
The origins of the Broken Sword series date back to the second half of the 1990s. The first installment of the series - Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars was released in 1996, garnering many favorable reviews from editorial outlets and adventure games fans. The sequel, Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror released in 1997, strengthened the brand's position. The developers took more time to make the next games - Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon (2003) i Broken Sword: The Angel of Death (2006). Kickstarter crowdfunding platform opened a new chapter in the history of the series. Successful fundraising allowed the developers to finance work on Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse. in 2008, fans have developed a free game called Broken Sword 2.5: The Return of the Templars, released by mindFactory.
The main characters of the Broken Sword series are George Stobbart, an American patent attorney, and Nicole "Nico" Collard, a French journalist. The protagonists specialize in uncovering secrets from the past. A theme that appears in most of the games in the series is the secrets of the Templars (the only exception being Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror).
The gameplay focuses on the classic aspects of adventure games. The characters visit exotic locations, talk to NPCs and unravel puzzles. The gameplay mechanics mostly use a point and click interface.
According to Revolution Software's estimates, the Broken Sword series has achieved sales of more than 6 million copies, with each game selling at least a million copies. The brand has received adaptations in the form of comic books, but there are also plans for a TV adaptation.
