Catan Universe is an unusual collection consisting of digital versiin ofs Catan card and board games, . The game allows players to build cities and to develop a trade empire on a newly discovered island. The digital version of the game was developed by Exozet studio and published by United Soft Media.
Catan games are based on colonizing an uninhabited island. Players compete against each other, trying to make the best use of the available territory as quickly and efficiently as possible. In order to succeed, it is necessary to build roads, towns, and cities, as well as to conduct well thought-out and strategically advantageous trade.
In Catan Universe players can play either alone or with other players. After completing the Arrival on Catan script, players get access to both single- and multiplayer modes. A maximum of 3 players can participate in a digital board game. Card games are conducted in the 1 on 1 mode.
Like most digital adaptations of board or card games, Catan Universe features relatively simple visuals consisting mainly of an interface, illustrated cards, and a board. Particularly noteworthy are the solid illustrations, thanks to which the Catan universe has a special atmosphere. The production supports the cross-play function, allowing players to have fun together with the owners of other platforms.

Catan on Switch doesn't have that, so unless you really enjoy playing board games against A.I. or have the patience to wait for potentially unsatisfying online competition, you are better off building the largest army or longest road somewhere else.

While it's functional I feel that Catan: Console Edition could have done a bit more to sway me from playing with its cardboard counterpart. The multiplayer features and AI do a lot for players who cannot get three friends together but some of its presentation, especially the audio side, leaves a bit to be desired. The app could also do with a bit of work to make it more viable. While I will be quite happy to play this by myself or when there is only two of us, it will never replace its board game equivalent. Catan: Console Edition could have been great, as it is, its serviceable, which is a shame.

Catan: Console Edition has some design issues but can be manageable when desperately looking for a CATAN fix on current generation consoles. It certainly needs some work in its default setup, speed options, and dice-rolling mechanics, but for the most part, it still does the trick.
